404 errors [Solved]

Hoping for some assistance. A while ago I was adding a module and trying to get the settings right when I stumbled across a post in the forums here that said to 'clear the cache'. I did that and discovered that I'd wiped most of the work I'd done on the website. After I fixed it all up again (save, save, save) I went back to the forum and found out a number of posts later that someone had highlighted that you should leave the index files or you'll fry your website. Good advice! Wish I had read all the posts before getting started...

Anyway, my issue at the moment is that every second time I try and load any of the CMS pages (About us, T&Cond, Contact us etc) at the bottom of the page I get a 404 error. So it might just be a rookie error but I can't figure out why it does it every second time. I thought I'd reversed all the damage, but clearly, I haven't.

Please help, riddled with 404 errors.

Hi Sweathog,

As you can see, the 2nd time, the URL where the about us etc links to has a /content/ extra in it, which shouldn't be there. (EDIT: It should be there when FriendlyURL is ON, but not when it's OFF)

This most probably has to do with some wrong redirecting.

Try the following:

Go to Advanced Parameters->Performance

- turn OFF your smarty cache and CLEAR Smarty Cache.

- 'Template cache' set to "Recompile templates if the files have been updated"

- turn off all ccc settings (i.e. do 'keep ... as original' (option 2 every time))

- turn off Apache optimization

- turn off Cache at bottom

And Save settings

Then go to Preferences->SEO&URLs

Toggle friendly URL option

Save

Reload frontpage (Maybe enforce reload with CTRL-F5 (Win)/Command-R (Mac)  )

Toggle friendly URL option back to original setting

Save

Reload frontpage (Maybe enforce reload with CTRL-F5 (Win)/Command-R (Mac)  )

Then click on about us

and look at the about us after the about us page fully loaded. Does it still say ..../content/... ??

If it's gone, change back all settings in Advanced Parameters->Performance

Save

Reload frontpage and check one more time.Check one more time

 (Don't forget to turn cache &smarty cache back ON afterwards, otherwise your site will load much slower!)

Hope this helps,

pascal

Thanks for your help. The 404 problem is gone and playing around a little more I found that the problem was, as you say, the 'friendly URL'.

The only thing I have to figure out now is - what can be done to make friendly URLs work without bringing back the content error?

Again, thanks so much for your help. I'm an absolute coding noob.

Hello,

I just changed over my website and noticed I get a 404 error code when trying to login, checkout, or go to my cart. I tried doing everything it said above but nothing worked. Can someone help me? Here is my website http://buddhajewelryorganics.com/en/
