Email failure Can someone help me with this error message please

I'am trying to use the php mail function from advanced parameters / email   and When I do a test email I get this message

 

Error: Please check your configuration
Sending failed using mail() as PHP's default mail() function returned boolean FALSE.

 

Im using 1.5.4.1  and don't have a clue what it means or how to fix it,  can anyone help please is this something I can sort via the software or do I need to contact my host.
