benjamin utterback
Hello, for your smarty cache folder, you should change the permission set to 777. Let me know if that solves the problem. Thanks!
jj33002
May seem like a dumb question to most, but what is the best way to go about changing the permissions?
benjamin utterback
No problem! You should contact your host for specific instructions on how to do this. You are most likely able to do it from your FTP or Cpanel but it is important to contact your Hosting Provider for confirmation. Do you have access to your files and FTP? benjamin utterback
Okay cool, you can go to the cache folder and right click and choose File Permissions. Change it to 777 and see if that works.
jj33002
I tried it and it didn't work.

NemoPS
Did you check that all subfolders also have 777? also, is your main folder writeble?
jj33002
Sorry I have been out of town working all weekend. I did check the subfolders and they were set to 777. I am not sure about my main folder being writeable or not. I did try to upload some more files and filezilla came up with an error that said "553 Can't open that file: Disk quota exceeded Error: Critical file transfer error" I contacted host and they said it is not on there end. I am showing that on my host I still have plenty of room. Don't know if that helps narrow it down at all.
NemoPS
It might be the quota for your ftp user. Can you check it on cPanel?
benjamin utterback
Yeah, I would also try to use another FTP program just in case, the problem may not be with the actually size of the data, but the problem may be from the number of files its transferring. How many files are you uploading? Also, you may want to increase these settings in your php.ini file, check with your host to see if it can be done. Thank you! upload_max_filesize: Maximum file size your server will allowed to be uploaded, in megabytes post_max_size: Maximum data size allowed to uploaded, in megabytes
jj33002
@Nemo This info is directly off my c-panel page. Disk Usage: 407.04 / 10000 MB Bandwidth: 942.47 / 100000 MB I am not sure about an FTP quota. I can't find anything on my c-panel about it. @Benjamin Ok, forgive my ignorance up front. So the number of files I am transmitting through filezilla could cause my shop to crash? That seems illogical to me, but I am also very new to all of this. I am going to try a different FTP program. I was uploading a couple thousand files before it crashed. So far my host has not been much help, but I am using a free service for now. I was hoping to use free to get shop up and going and then switch to paid host. But I can always ask. As I showed above my host is showing that I have plenty of disk usage and bandwidth left. They told me that the error has nothing to do with them, and that is all I got out of them.
NemoPS
Click on FTP Accounts. You'll see each of the users have a quota
jj33002
I clicked on my FTP Accounts and it shows this Create a New FTP Account public_html Directory: http://hsrsupply.com/ Quota (MB): Username: Password: Verify password: List of Active FTP Accounts Hostname Directory Username Password Actions You do not have any FTP accounts So I still don't know for sure about the quota. But I did try to take some of the pictures off and it made my site start working again. Which I don't understand because that seems to me like I am overloading my server and when I delete some of my stuff it works. But as I showed earlier, I have plenty of disk space left. I am all sorts of confused.
jj33002
So is there a way to raise the ftp quota? Or how exactly does that work? And I understand if you reach your quota, not being able to put anything else on, but what is the reason for it crashing the site?
NemoPS
Actually that depends on your hosting. If you're the cpanel admin you should be able to add a new user with an unlimited ftp quota.
jj33002
I guess I can't change it. I tried adding a new ftp account with plenty of ftp quota and no luck. I have tried deleting stuff and it works again. With my lack of knowledge in all of this I am at the point of giving up. Something is just not making sense to me. I don't understand the whole ftp quota thing. My thinking is saying that my server is showing I have plenty of diskspace and bandwidth left so I should be able to keep putting stuff onto my site until I max those out on my server. Am I totally off base here or am I thinking right?? I guess I just need to bite the bullet and go to a paid server that I can get more help out of. Maybe that will help me alleviate some of these problems?
NemoPS
Wait, I got lost, you're using a free service? If so, that's why you can't change the quota...likewise
jj33002
Yeah sorry, I thought I had said that earlier. I am using a free host. So that is probably all of my problem is that they have it set up the way it is and I can't change anything?
NemoPS
Can't be 100% sure but... yeah, likely!
jj33002
Ok, well thanks for all of your help. And I will get store up with a lot fewer products and once I get all the bugs worked out, I will switch servers.
