Migrating shop to new domain name, including email from new name.

Recommended Posts

What would be the least painful migration? I am building a PrestaShop on a new domain name and will want to migrate it to our primary domain once complete.

Should I copy database and files to original set-up and not mess with email, or should I point the domain name to the new server and re-configure email?

I have WHM/CPanel access. Also, would it be easy to create a second store and keep the original server, by creating its URL as the second store?

Example. I have originalshop.com (Zen Cart) and created newshop.com (PrestaShop). I need newshop.com to change it's domain name and PrestaShop to the name originalshop.com, but I do not want to loose emails set-up for originalshop.com

This is an active ecommerce site and want the least ammount of down time.

Hi, the first thing you should do is to make a duplicate copy of each store on a subdomain. Those will be your test stores during this migration. Because they are exact duplicates (preferably hosted on their same respected servers) you will know what to expect beforehand, thus minimizing the potential downtime.

Why don't you export the emails you have from your originalshop? That way you don't need to worry about losing them.

You start getting into htaccess and php config issues when rewrites come into play for subdomains, so I wanted to just get it working on the new server then migrate to root, or point nameserver to new IP. I was just concerned about active email.

I have a VPS using WHM and cpanel, so have the full capability to do so, just want to figure the best way. Right now I am getting all on the same server, so the most complex part should be just changing url paths in PrestaShop. So I would move files into active server, along with database, then change URLs and database prefix. Then the emails should never change.

Also, the Home directory on the server will change, not sure if that matters to PrestaShop.

I would export the E-mails out completely>Remove all databases and files connected to your originalshop>change the DNS for your newshop to original shop>iron out any lingering problems concerning URL's, database prefix, 301 redriects/friendly url, SSL etc> and then import your customers' emails from originalshop into your newshop using csv
