Advice on upgrading Prestashop

Recommended Posts

Dear friends,

i have a 1.1.0.5 prestashop running where i made several customizations to the front appearance but also inside some of the .TPL files, etc.

I do not want to try use some automatic method to upgrade to newest version.

I just plan to somehow install in the same hosting the new prestashop, create one by one the products, do my customizations and when i am done and everything looks like working fine, i want somehow to simply set that website on air. I am not interested so much about the customers or the orders from the past.

So, my question is:

can i simply install it in a folder called e.g. newsite created on the root of the old website, then install everything there, customize, test, add products and when i am done, somehow to take it from this folder and copy all stuff (after deleting the old stuff) to the root and the site to be working all ok? Is there somewhere where the "root" path is kept for ALL the pages?

I hope i explained good what i would like to do.

you can do exactly what you described, how you do it will depend on the tools available to you from the hosting company.

For example, lets say you install the new store to domain.com/newstore. You would want to enable maintenance mode and enter your IP address in the allowed list. This will prevent anyway else from accidentally using the store while you are testing it.

When you are ready to deploy the new store, you just need to figure out a way to move the files under "newstore" to "root"

  • Remove old files from the root folder. You may even be able to just rename the existing root folder to "root.old" or "public_html" to "public_html.old". This will depend on the folder permissions. If you can rename it, then I would suggest creating a root/oldstore and moving everything into the oldstore folder.
  • Now you need to move everything under newstore to root. If your cpanel has a file manager, you might be able to drag/drop everything. If you have SSH access, you can execute a move command. Otherwise you might have to download everything under "newstore" using FTP to your local desktop. And then re-upload everything under root
  • Once you are complete, do not attempt to use the front office yet. You should be able to log into back office, navigate to the SEO section, and update the base URL from "newstore" to empty. Things should work now.
