Upgrade from 1.4.9 to 1.4.11 or 1.5.4 ?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am currently running 1.4.9 in a live environment, and except for the best products and guest checkout not working, everything runs quite fine.

So my question is, should I upgrade to 1.4.11, or even 1.5.4 ? I am wondering if these versions compare in stability and performance, and what you would recommend doing?

Thanks for your input and advice, much appreciated!

Dan

the phrase "If it is not broke, don't fix it" applies heavily to Prestashop. You really need to decide for yourself if the new features in v1.5 provide you any benefit, or if the security patches/enhancements in v1.4.10 or v1.4.11 are worth the investment.

In either case, you will likely need to make adjustments to your theme (assuming you are using a custom theme), and you will need to determine if the modules you use are supported in the newer versions.

If you do decide to upgrade, do not just upgrade your live store. Make a complete copy of your store, confirm that it works properly, and then proceed to upgrade the test copy. This will allow you to determine if you will encounter issues with the upgrade process

Thanks bellini13, I'm a big adept of that adage, do not fix it if not broken. But I was curious to hear what others think, if the upgrade is worth it in terms of stability, performance and security. Like, is 1.4.11 a must-have compared to 1.4.9 ?

Also, I have issues with the best-seller module not showing prices and guest checkout (I need to get rid of that thing) not allowing customers to track their orders, so it's not that my 1.4.9 is not broken, it's just a little broken.

I just upgraded from 1.4.10 to 1.4.11 and I'm likin' it. It feels snappier, faster, and I have a large site. That said, I was very happy when 1.4.9 came along; it was much faster than anything before. I agree with bellini13's advice. In my case the theme was fine. The only adjustments I had to make were to re-enable all my third party modules because the upgrade process closes them, which is a good idea. I've had luck with the 1.4.* rollback module, so I just made backups of everything and upgraded. I would say, don't even think about upgrading to 1.5.4 unless you're ready for a lot of downtime fixing problems. I mean days to weeks.

I just got this error...and thought...why am I risking an upgrade? I'm perfectly happy with v1.4.10 and the main three new features don't sound all that compelling at all. Why am I risking days of painful fixing if it doesn't go smoothly? I quickly cancelled out of it and I'll leave it at that. Not worth it!!

you should NEVER upgrade a live store without first testing it on a copy of your store. I would also avoid the autoupgrade module, unless you have not made a single change to your store.

Now with that out of the way, there is no harm in creating a copy of your store, and then testing the manual upgrade process. This will tell you what issues you will encounter, and give you the opportunity to fix them. The manual upgrade process is extremely well document in the resources | developer guide menu on this site.

In the end, you may figure out that upgrading to v1.5 is actually pretty easy, and you will learn a few things that you never knew before

How about the new gsitemap module (v.2.2.3) work fine after upgrade?

I've just upgrade from 1.4.9 to 1.4.11 (locally) and gsitemap module didnot work.

Pls. share if you can solve it.

Thanks,

Hello PS folks,

I'm running v1.5.4.1, I was startup with a clean install and have taken serveral steps to become a resonable running shop on the moment.

But there will be allways issue's to solved.

My opinion are test a new version allways on a local environment, before you update any good running version.

What I have read, there are a big difference in DB structure about early verslons and the 1.5.

The prob with the new gsitemap, there are opened a seperate tread, and many users have the same prob, the update come yesterday, I hope that they fix soon this issue.

Best Regards,

Generaal

The main reason I was considering upgrading to 1.5 is performance, to see if 1.5 is faster than 1.4.9 - which apparently it's not. So I am probably going to stick with 1.4.9.

The only drawback is that most new modules / themes are developed for 1.5 and thus incompatible.
