Shopboy1111
I have about 3 to 5 minutes experience with Prestashop and this is my first question which I would have though to have a simple answer. 1) Where is the Prestashop mySql Database located and what is it called ? 2) Can I download/upload the MySql Database from/to its lov=cation using FTP ? My Prestashop website has some directories - I cant find anything in them which resembles a database I was guessing that the database may just live in one of them (or in a sub-directory) - or am I dreaming ? I am looking to understand the layout of the database so I can populate some of the data off-line then copy the database into its location ie, I want to understand how the data looks and poke the data into the fields within the tables myself (Yes- you have to get it right otherwise it probably wont work) I also need to be able to extract data from the database as I require I need to be able to upload/download using FTP as I need to run processes to get/put data as required It will help if someone could simply tell me what the name of the MySql database might be eg, Prestashop.xxx Then I will try and find it within the directories myself I dont even know what I am looking for - I only have experience with Microsoft Databases which have a file type of .mdb Access and .mdf for SQL Server databases These seem to be simple to find by search for the file type (.mdf/.mdb) What is a mysql file type please ? Thanks Apologies if this is a stupid question
vekia
prestashop uses mysql server to hande all most important informations in your shop (products, categories etc.) there is no way to upload database as a file or something via your FTP, because mysql database is an "service" (the same as FTP is an service - not "file") the best way to use / change database is database manager software, you have to connect to you mysql server then you will be able to manage database
Shopboy1111
Well that's a little foreign to me. I guess the data must be "somewhere" on the website - Is this unknown/hidden/encrypted? Is it spread over a number of files? What you are suggesting is that MySQL is a database service but there is NO ACTUAL DATABASE and there are no obvious files that hold the data. ie, there are no data files anywhere on my website that can be viewed as text / hex / whatever -it just magically appears when you run the Prestashop application and manager Can you suggest somewhere I can go to read so I can try to get my head around this - my little mind cannot comprehend what you are suggesting. You must be right in what you say - I am just a little confused, I'm sorry Thanks so much for your interest
vekia
for the first, you must give us a little more informations you use prestabox service? btw. here is an information about database & prestashop: http://doc.prestashop.com/display/PS15/Installing+PrestaShop#InstallingPrestaShop-Creatingadatabaseforyourshop (it's a guide related to prestashop installation process, but you can find there informations about mysql database and how to create it)
benjamin utterback
I think he posted in the wrong section. This is forum section is regarding PrestaBOX not PrestaSHOP... mySQL database is linked in phpMyAdmin which is located in your Cpanel or other server "services". There you will have the whole PrestaShop database linked to a domain that have your PrestaShop files uploaded to it.
Shopboy1111
I wonder if you could upload a picture of what your Cpanel Looks like - mine certainly has no reference to a database, a phpMyAdmin area, NONE OF THIS I am using a template I bought which uses Prestashop Perhaps they have disabled all reference to databases - I cant find ANY Thanks
Paulito
Good morning You must have a database and that will be located on the server which, I assume, you are paying for monthly or yearly. The fact that you bought a template which must have be uploaded to somewhere means you have control over what appears on the site, unless of course you have a "white label" website where you would have little control over you website. Anyway, here is a link so you can see what a cpanel looks like Paul

vekia
cPanel isn't "on your website" cPanel is a hosting control panel, there are many other control panels, everything depends on your hoster. Hosting providers use different panels to manage their buisness. We don't know your hosting specification, so in my opinion you should contact with your hoster. As them for the hosting specification, for an access to the control panel, and ask about PHPMyAdmin access.
Shopboy1111
I am now getting the drift When someone told me the database was accessible through the control panel, of course I assumed it meant through the control panel of my web site (WHY WOULDN'T IT BE ?) This confusion coupled with PrestaBox (huh?) has led me around a merry goosechase Thank you for such a simple clarification (It always is so simple when you know how and you also know how to tell a rookie (like me) something that makes no assumptions and just makes simple sense Sometimes when we work a product we get so close to it that we cant see the simple answer Thank you again (I knew it was such a basic, simple, so simple question)
benjamin utterback
Hi Shopboy1111, it can be confusing getting use to terminology and vernacular of any industry or company. Technically your Control Panel (Cpanel) is the control panel of your website (not your online store). PrestaBox is our sister company that provides Hosting Solutions mainly in Europe. PrestaShop is the free and opensource software that you are probably using. The BackOffice/Admin Panel is for your online PrestaShop store. Anytime you hear Cpanel, it's regarding the Hosting control Panel for your website, it has phpMyAdmin and your mySQLdatabase in it. Your hosting provider can clear this up more. Sorry about the confusion and make sure you read related threads in the forum you are posting to make sure it is in the right section. Here is a good link with many tutorials for PrestaShop http://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/prestashop-15/341-find-database-name
