splitting background in 3 columns

A while ago I was looking for a way in which I could modify my background in order to have three columns layout that wouldn't interfere with the page content but could have different background values,

 

After working this solution out I ended up creating a tutorial to share some basic knowledge that everybody should know,

Hello, 

 

Many thanks for this nice tutorial. Unfortunately, I am not able to split my background...
I did (I think) everything like you said in the tutorial, but it doesn't work. 
The idea would be to have the middel background in white and then to use an image for the left and right column...
