Strange problem with URL rewriting

I have a very strange problem with URL rewriting.

 

In the back end it is enabled and this is my not working .htaccess:

The very strange thing is that if I replace it with

 

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^.*$ index.php

 

and I try to go to mywebsite.com/this-is-a-test I reach the PS 404 page.

 

My index.php is edited to just quit with a message, just to be sure that the script is executed. So index.php is not executed. I don't understand where the redirect to the 404 page is done.

 

This is driving me mad! Please help me
