Newbie updating from 1.4.17 to 1.5.4.1 , where should I start?

Hello there fellow members. Let me get straight to the point. I would like to upgrade a prestashop 1.4.17 to the latest version but I'm not sure where should I begin. I have setup a decoy shop on different address and I can't seem to be able to import contacts and products from backup. I'm pretty noob at programming / tables/ php so I'm struggling here. Where should i begin to learn more about presta upgrade process without harming the shop I have currently. The idea is to import everything on latest version and different address and once tested and everything works fine I would just redirect to new shop. Should I do some PHP/mysql tutorials to do that? I've read that tables have changed since version 1.4.17 and upgrade process is rather painfull. Any help would be great. Best regards.

you should start by reading the upgrade guide in the resources menu above, under developers guide.

 

I will warn you that the upgrade process is not "newbie" friendly, trend carefully

*you will able to do the manual upgrade if you have the skills below:

 

1. able to use the filemanager in cpanel (copy n move files, compress folder, download and upload the compress folder, edit and save some config file)

2. phpmyadmin (create database, create user and link them the database, import and export database)

 

Just follow the steps describe in the manual and u will be fine. Make sure do not perform this on ur running website.

just wondering is the manual method better then the 1 click upgrade module?

in theory the 1 click upgrade is better, since it is meant to be easy for anyone to use. however, it fails in the real world application, since it does not account for all the possibilities that exist (for example, customizations made).

 

for that reason, I only use the manual method. It means that I have more work to perform manually, but it gives me the control needed to ensure success.
