replacing 1.3 website W/ 1.5 local

Recommended Posts

hi,

First post on the forum

I am hosting 1.5 on my imac and have a website built with 1.3 thats too outdated and messed up to edit. My business has changed so I want to start from scratch.

Can i replace my current live website (hosted at godaddy) with the local 1.5 site I'm messing with. Same web address. I am not sure where to go in godaddy, I dont want my acct locked by making changes (I've read lots fo stuff regarding this) Im a complete novice.

I want to build it solo from the ground up and actually know how to do everything (or most)

Everything on 1.3 is outdated , links are broken. I had it built at a busy time and The designer didnt know presta shop so it was never very good or finished. She did custom stuff that I cant figure out when poking around.

Is it weird to move iot from local to the live site or is it easier to just overwrite, reinstall right to the site? i havent done much on the local site, I dont want to do a bunch of work and not be able to transfer it over.

Thanks for any help

Hello, yes this is rather simple to do. I would suggest you take backup copies of your database and website on godaddy so you can always recover in case of a problem.

Here are the basic steps for doing what you want.

1) On your local mac, you would need to export your database using phpmyadmin, or some other mysql client.

2) Then you would create a new mysql database using godaddy's control panel. Notate the database name, username and password for later use.

3) Then you would import your exported database into the new godaddy database.

4) Then using your favorite FTP client, you would upload all of your new PS store files to the godaddy server. If you are not using sub-folders under the root folder, then you will need to purge your old store files first.

5) Then you need to edit your config/config.inc.php on godaddy to use your new godaddy database that you created in step 2.

At this point you should be able to log into the back office. You will likely be prompted to change your domain name from localhost to the actual domain name. This should also re-create your htaccess file. At which point you can try your front office.

Give it a shot, the only thing you could really screw up bad are the backups, so make sure you do that and store them somewhere safe. If the move doesn't work, that is easy to cleanup and try again.
