Sub Categories question

Hello, quick question.

 

I have the 'show sub categories' option selected in the theme editor so that all sub categories will display in the center of the screen when a parent category is selected.

 

I also have a layered navigation template to show sub categories applied to the parent category as can be seen in attachment.

The problem is that the layered navigation sub categories on the left cannot be clicked, i believe it is because there are no products directly in the category, although there are around 15 sub categories in the 2 sub categories each with products in.

 

is there a way to achieve this?

The same thing happens once a sub category is selected. it will list all of them on the centre of the page and on the layered navigation, however when the layered navigation category is selcted it will just list the products below the sub categories, rather than actually jumping to the sub category page.
