Recursive write permissions on files and folders AND PHP parameters

hey guys i have read many of the post on these and none seem to make sense to me,

 

while installing prestashop i have run into these errors

 

 

Recursive write permissions on files and folders:

~/translations/

~/upload/

~/sitemap.xml

 

PHP parameters:

Cannot open external URLs

PHP magic quotes option is enabled

 

now when i look at the help on the installation i get this

 

 

Recursive write permission on ~/translations/ File browser / FTP client / command line

Recursive write permission on ~/upload/ File browser / FTP client / command line

Recursive write permission on ~/sitemap.xml File browser / FTP client / command line

 

now i dont know what File browser / FTP client / command line means

 

i have changed my chmod in my root site folder to 777 but it still gives me the errors

 

how can a change this and the PHP paramaters

 

some help would be great
