New order emails erratically getting sent

Hi,

 

The email functionality of my site has suddenly become erratic since the last 3-4 weeks.

 

"New order" emails are getting sent to both the customer and admin on and off. Same for messages sent to customers from the order page. Same for "In Transit" emails.

 

Have checked spam folder and everywhere else. The emails were just not sent.

 

What could have caused this? There has been no major change to the site since the last few months.

 

Using php mail()

Test mail is working fine.
