Help Needed - 404 error<page-not-found> doesn't show in the url

hi all

recently i treid to redirect all my 404 pages to the main index page by editing htacess file

i wrote as ErrorDocument 404 /http://www.kathmanduclothing.com$1

but got error as redirect loop..< i did bcoz i found it in a blog to reidrect the 404 pages > but then i rolled back to my previous state.

After coming to my initial state i cannot get the 404 errors, i mean i cant see page not found in the urls as they used to show up in the broken urls when a visitor lands on a broken page or in no products exist page .

Dont know what wrong

The htacess rule it same as it was

ErrorDocument 404 /404.php

i think the 404 controller is broken or may be the 404.php file isnt working
