Bill Dalton
Right click on the file. Choose properties > Security Click Edit Click Add In the box that appears type Everyone then click check names. Then click ok. Then click on Full Control. (this gives full control to Everyone. Click Apply. Now give your problem another try. If it doesn't work now than you may need to reinstall xampp. This is just to see if it will work. Not a good idea to run your machine this way. We can make it more secure after. Bill Dalton
Windows XP's security tab is hidden by default, so before the permissions can be set you need to: Go to My Computer. Click on the Tools>Folder Options menu item. Select the View tab. Under Advanced settings, scroll down to the bottom and uncheck Use simple file sharing (Recommended). Click Ok. Then do my other post.

sandral
Hi, Not using XAMPP; live, but set to maintenance and should not affect anything I do on the back end. Set htaccess to 0777 after deleting and re-installing translations; yes, I cleared the cache, but no luck getting rid of that blue informational: "Your .htaccess file must be writable." under Localization then Languages. Am I missing something; any suggestions anyone? Running 1.5.4.0. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you
sandral
BTW Fido, Hi! Didn't mean to hijack your message up there. I'm not exactly clear on what you're trying to do, but I do use XAMPP and the same message appears in it where I also have prestashop installed and I have full control over the htaccess file. I'm wondering if it's a prestashop bug.
vekia
it isn't prestashop bug, here on forum you can read many threads related to the xampp and windows OS...
sandral
Hello Vekia, Thank you for your reply. I'm not as concerned with the (same) issue on xampp as I am on my Web site. I am receiving an informational error message under Localization, Languages that reads, "Your .htaccess file must be writable." when it is set to 0777. I apologize for replying to a topic, which is slightly off topic for me. Actually, I am seeking a solution on how to get rid of the informational error message. If you can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

Bill Dalton
Hey Fido sorry I missed this thread! Please let us know how this turns out for you.
Bill Dalton
sandral, I have seen several threads with your problem. People set the htaccess file permission but it doesn't work for them. In all cases they end up contacting their host and explain that they cannot write to their htaccess file. Or that some things can write to it but not all. It turns out that the host has restrictions on the htaccess that override the users settings. I suggest you contact your host and let them know of this problem and ask if they can set your htaccess file permissions for you. Trip
I have that information window too but I have no issues with htaccess so I would just ignore it as long as the shop is working.I've just tested... adding a language is no problem it is just an information window so I would treat it like that. I second that it it misleading but it is blue and says "Your .htaccess file must be writable." ... if there is a problem it would say ... your htaccess is not writable... please fix your permissions or something like that. I just want to say I have that information on my life server and on my local lampp but imo it has no effect so you can ignore that as long as you have no real issues with mod_rewrite. I see on my live server it is even falsely reported unter SEO url's with a yellow warning sign like mod rewrite is not enabled on your server. I guess depending on you configuration PS can not parse the string from the php.ini or wherever PS get's the information but as I know that mod_rewrite is working I just ignore that, enable that anyway and have no issues. All the best, trip
sandral
Thanks Trip, Guess I just have to live with that blue box, because my mod_rewrite is enabled, and access to my htaccess file is set properly. Sandra
sandral
Hi Bill, I set htaccess successfully to 0777; mod_rewrite enabled as well. Seems to be working; guess I have to live with that blue box telling me to make my htaccess writable.
sandral
Hey Fido, I hope everything is working out for you. I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do; set your htaccess to writable? I use Filezilla and just right-click on the file to select set permissions and change the setting. If you have a cpanel, you can also do it in its file manager. Or, you can just call your hosting provider and have them set it for you. Not sure why you think Windows has anything to do with not being able to set the htaccess; is that what you were thinking? Sorry if I'm not sure. Hang in there! You'll get it going! Ciao, Sandra L
Fido Dondus
I made fresh install of windows 7.I formated comp. i instaleed xampp , and i got this warning when installing it : Important!Because an activated User Acount Control(UAC) on your system soem functions of XAMPP are possibley restricted. With UAC please avoid to install XAMPP to c:|Program files)missing write permissions).Or deactivate UAC with msconfig after the setup. Bill Dalton
User Account Control Settings (UAC) Go to Control Panel Click on System and Security Under Action Center choose Change User Account Control settings. Alternatively you can search for UserAccountControlSettings.exe and run that.

Fido Dondus
i uninstalled xampp, deleted prestashop and reebooted my system. Then i installed new version of xampp. I got this notice : The User Account Control(UAC) is deactivated on your system(reccomended). Please note : A later activation of UAC can restrict the funcionality of XAMPP. I installed new version of prestashop and i went to see if i still got warning about htcasses. Its still there. Just for info, i got win 7 ultimate 32 bit system which i installed just to see if i can solve this problem just with other version of windows .I hoped i wont have the same issue like on xp. Bill Dalton
Man! You have the most secure PC in the world! You don't even need antivirus software. Maybe something doesn't like the location. Maybe the permissions would not be as strict if you create a new directory. I would create a new directory, C:/website. I would try installing XAMMP there rather than in Program Files. I do like your attitude Fido. NEVER Give Up! You might also try, http://www.wampserver.com/en/
Fido Dondus
i have to partitions. 1: c - system 2:d - programs and stuff I installed on partition 2:d the path is : D:\XAMPP Should i try to install to c/:Program Files ? I was checking wamp server and thought about it, but to be honest i was waiting for ur replays and in meantime i was googling like crazy about this issue If i give up, im mentaly dead, and i cant afford this luxury.Fight till the end
Bill Dalton
You could try it on your C drive. It is a permission problem, so it might be that your D partition doesn't have the needed permissions ... or not.
