bInstalling on sub directory of active website

Recommended Posts

I have a website that is currently running on a different platform and I am looking to switch over to PrestaShop. I tried installing PrestaShop 1.5.4.0 in a sub directory so I can access it to build the new website without disturbing activity of the current site, and then transfer over once the PrestaShop site is ready to go.

When I loaded the PrestaShop software on my FTP file Manager (GoDaddy) under it's own Sub Directory, and try to access the install page via the sub directory (www.topchoiceelectronics.com/prestashop), I am automatically redirected to the root site www.topchoiceelectronics.com

Am I missing a step here?

I've delete all prestashop files and will try to start from scratch in case there was an error in the original file transfer.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Maybe easier to add a subdomain?

in cPanel of godaddy, add subdomain (for example: testprestashop.topchoiceelectronics.com), and couple it to the physical folder you want to install the files.

Just an idea.

more info, about installing in a subdirectory as you like, or in a subdomain look here:

Hope this helps,

Pascal

Hi Pascal,

After posting this, I also realized that I could try installing on a subdomain, which I tried, with the same result unfortunately. Perhaps I am not coupling the subdomain to the root folder correctly? When I created the subdomain I entered the name of the folder that I wanted, which then appeared in my file manager. I proceeded to upload files to this folder, but I am still unable to access the install page.

If I enter <subdomain>.mywebsite.com I am redirected to a 404 error page (perhaps an error in file upload?), and if I enter mywebsite.com/<subdomain directory> I am simply forwarded to the homepage of my website.

Could there be something in my current web admin settings that is blocking access to the prestashop install page?

Thanks for your help.

Let's check. When adding a subdomain, you give the subdomain name: subdomain. You choose the main domain which is added to the subdomain name: (mywebsite.com). Document root: public_html/subdomain

(N.B. May take some time before the subdomain is available. So wait a little and reload the subdomain if you get a 404 error. It may be that the DomainName Directory Servers don't know it yet. Can take up to a few hours!)

After the subdomain is available, copy the PS installation files in the folder public_html/subdomain/

(So then you should have a folder public_html/subdomain/install available if you copied it to the correct place)

Then type http://subdomain.mywebsite.com/install and it should work.

For now, if you created the subdomain as described above, just wait until the subdomain is reachable. Then install
