Customer order receipt email not sending

I purchase products from our store and never receive the order summary/receipt email as a customer. The store owner receives the order email notification and we're able to send emails to customers when the order status is updated, but the order summary receipt is never emailed to the customer upon purchase. I've searched the forums for 30 min and am unable to find the solution. How do I turn this on? Is this possible?
