Theme programming

Hi,

I need to let some html show only at homepage.
Or add a "quick login" on the top, just like the top of this forum.

So I need to know how to program the template, the {if} blocks, which variables do I have available (like "if it's homepage", "if is logged in", etc).

I would have thought you could modify the userinfo block

then go to modules->positions then edit the userinfoblock and exclude it from all pages yoy do not want it to appear on
