Frontend/backend suddenly goes slow - have to restore from backup to resolve

Hi All,

 

We are using Prestashop 1.5.3.1 on a Ubuntu server (mySQL 5.5.29, PHP 5.3.10).

 

Usually the site runs fine, however we've had a situation where suddenly both frontend and backend runs very slow - 15-30 seconds between pages. We can't see anything that may have caused it. This is when three people have been using the backend to load products in.

 

We've tried changing all settings in Performance (e.g. enabling/disabling cache, force recompiling, combining/minfiying etc) with no sizeable effect. The only thing that works is to restore from a backup.

 

We are on what is known as a 'Hybrid server' from Heart Internet - this is not quite a shared host, but not quite a dedicated server, so it should be fast enough and generally proves to be so.

 

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what we can try or check for?
