tonito
Hi,Is there a way to calculate taxes on shipping as well as on the item purchased? I believe this is a customary practice in the US (correct me if I am wrong because I am a French developer not very accustomed to US taxes). For instance our store is based in New York state. My understanding is that anyone getting their order shipped to a different state would not be taxed, but customers getting their orders shipped to New York would get taxed (8.625%) on the item and shipping. How does one get around this limitation in Prestashop? Is setting taxes in Paypal the only way?Any hint appreciated.
tomerg3
From what I've seen, taxes are never calculated on shipping, since you are not the one who is selling that service...
tonito
What you say makes sense. However, what should I make of this piece of information:"As of June 1, 2008, when products are purchased online and shipped into New York State, some retailers must charge the tax amount appropriate to the locality where the goods are shipped, and in addition, must also charge the appropriate tax on the cost of shipping and handling."Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sales_taxes_in_the_United_States#New_York
tomerg3
To be honest I always make sure to make my online purchases from out of state shops. Now that I think about it, it makes sense since the seller can claim the shipping charges as a business expense...I never tried it in prestashop, but if it doesn't calculate the tax on the total including shipping, it shouldn't be that hard to change. pogiputi
Has anyone come up with a solution to this? Here in Canada, we must charge tax on shipping for purchases made in the province of the shop
tomerg3
In the carrier page (Shipping -> Carrier) you can assign tax to a carrier, or leave it without tax.
taoreflex
This is a problem in the UK. There is no VAT charged by Royal Mail, however, this is confusing because when you send VATable items you must charge VAT on the shipment. If the items you are sending are not VATable, such as books or children's clothing, then you don't need to charge VAT. If you send a combination of VATable and nonVATable items then you have to charge VAT on the proportion of the shipment that is VATable, but not on the proportion that is nonVATable. When sending by courier the same rules apply. The courier charges you VAT which you reclaim. You only need to charge your customer VAT if you are sending VATable products.
ctc
In the carrier page (Shipping -> Carrier) you can assign tax to a carrier, or leave it without tax. I've done this in my shop, and when someone adds something to a basket as a guest, the quote for shipping has tax added on. Unfortunately, when they register and set up an address, or log in with an address already set up, the shipping no longer includes the tax! It's driving me nuts trying to figure it out UPDATE: I figured out my problem... I hadn't selected the different zones under the "tax" tab in the payments section...
