how do i customize the appearance of the default shop?

Either get an existing theme -- some are free, some cost money;

 

Or edit the css and tpl files yourself. Editing the css files is relatively easy, and css is well-documented. But you can mostly only adjust colour, font size and a few other things here.

So you have to go through all the tpl files, figuring out which one is responsible for what you want, and then work out which line is the one to edit, and then work out what to edit.

Install a firefox addon called FireBug and play with it. You can easily find the CSS classes to edit for each an every item on the page.

This could help you out to get started (if yo do know some html, css, php).
