Bluehost Hosting Problems

Recommended Posts

I moved our website over to bluehost a few months ago, and within a month i started getting complaints from customers on how slow the site was.

I investigated and it looked like the issue was slow database response.

This was also the same when in the bluehost cpanel.

I contacted blue host and they informed me it was a problem with our database and we needed to get a developer to look at the structure of our database.

I spend about a month personally investigating the database and found nothing wrong with it.

We also had a lot of 10 minute down times and oddly these downtimes were sometimes during the early hours when our website was not being used.

It got to the point were is could not go on, so i uploaded our website to another shared server on 1and1 and changed the dns records to point at the 1and1 servers.

Over night the problem was gone.

I also did a bit of googleing and found others with similar problems, so if you are having problems with your site and you are on a shared server with blue host, dont take their word for it and dig deeper, the problem could be with their slow servers / over subscribed server.

I am not saying that everyone will have these problems, and it looks like a lot of people who use prestashop use then without issue, but my experience with them has been bad.

I had the same problems.

The problem is CPU throttling by Bluehost. They just switch your website off for short periods of time (seconds). Somewhere on your CPanel you find the statistics about how often you have been throttled.

See: http://www.webhostingsecretrevealed.com/featured-articles/bluehost-hostmonster-user-alert-cpu-throttling/

They claim that you used too much resources but if you look around on the internet you will find complaints from people with little visited sites who still get throttled.

It is puzzling to me why PS is still recommending Bluehost. They are fast when you aren't throttled but this kind of behavior should be unacceptable.

I also looked at the cpu trotleing and only saw them do this once about a week ago, but the site was still slow, and had a lot of downtime.

Also the downtime last saturday was about every 35 minutes for exactly 10 minutes or exactly 15 minutes.

I only tried Bluehost becase of the prestashop recomendation, i moved away from 1and1 becase they were not flexible enough and did not even offer ssh or the ability to do cron jobs on shared servers. however, we never had any downtime and we have been using them for at least three years.

I now have a dedicated server with them so i can get these options, so will give them ago again.

Bluehost is the worst hosting company. I don t understand how come that prestashop is recommending this company.

Now i have to find another provider. Website is very slow with them i cannot even create products in a secure way because the connection is so bad that when i click create a product and sometimes i get a blank screen "page cannot be displayed".

I dont advise anyone to take Bluehost for Prestashop. Maybe for oscommerce will be fine.

Well, yeah. I opened a thread in the forums too coz Prestashop is really slow in Bluehost, and most of the loading time is in the server side.

I've been reading lots of recommendations, and the best options for hosting my prestashop store are:

webhostingbuzz

Hostgator

Heartinternet.co.uk

If you find any other better option to replace BlueHost, that would be great. I ran away from GoDaddy coz of it's inflexibility to create cron jobs and have better control of my website, but GoDaddy is indeed faster and more reliable than GoDaddy :S.

I can't say enough good things about webhostingbuzz. I have a dedicated machine there and that is where most of my clients end up hosting. Where are you located, they have servers in the uk too.

Hi Technophobe,

Bluehost is a very good hosting company. Overall we have seen hundreds of user really enjoying there services. Now, the configuration might be a bit different depending on how you sign up. If you sign up using http://bluehost.com/prestashop you get a special configurations that we negotiated with them for our users. This configuration guarantees that the site will run nicely.

Now that is a great configuration for small to medium sites. If you are looking for a bit more power A2 hosting also offers VPS, dedicated hosting for PrestaShop users with servers worldwide.

Give me a call at the office, 888 947 6543, and I will help you troubleshoot the speed on your website.

Thanks

Matt

Well, I may be wrong, Matt Serralta, but I consider that you're lying.

Back in january I contacted Bluehost tech support regarding the many problems I had with my prestashop installation (Down times, database issues, slow performance) and asked them if there was any way to solve them or to get a special configuration due to the alliance between Prestashop and Bluehost. I even sent them the link http://bluehost.com/prestashop !!!

They told me that there was NO SPECIAL DEAL WITH PRESTASHOP and they had no suggestions for me to solve my problems rather than the common ones (Change PHP version to 5.2 and... solve these problems on my own).

If you mean bluehost then you are very wrong? Bluehost are totally useless, and most of the replies i get from there customer support blamed the software i was using.

Oh and that was prestashop by the way.

I moved away from them to 1and1 who are not considered to be the best and the site has been fine since.

Hi, technophobe. Could you please test your website with GTMetrix and give us some info. about the performance of the hosting service at 1and1 ?

Thanks in advance :)

I got 80% page speed grade (B) and 71% on Yslow grade ©

This is on a dedicated server now

the same site on a shared server i get 79% and 70% so not a great difference.

Most of the low readings are to do with images and css.

I agree, i just posted it becase i was asked.

Infact when i was on blue host it shows something similar, the problem i had was slow to non existand database speeds

I tried a number of things to find out what the problem was.

I even hosted the site contents on bluehose and put the database on another hosting company and it instantly improved.

This is when i decided to jump ship.

Those numbers mean nothing about server speed though. It is like me saying I put a new engine in my car and now my motorcycle runs faster.

I had problems with bluehost as well. and yes, I followed presta's recommendation for hosting on them. Site was terribly slow, backoffice even slower. I moved my site to host gator after 1 month and the response time is at least 50% faster.

However, today, I have a problem with my presta now hosted on gator. after chatting with a tech, they told me they will fix it asap and notify me via email. I thought of moving from hostgator as well, but the reviews I have been reading for the last 4 hours for many of the alternatives (justhost, ipage, webhostingbuzz), are at least disappointing. And the problem is I am not making that much to go on a dedicated server.

I didn't say I have personal experience. I just "read" many negative reviews. Do you recommend them over Hostgator? My problem is solved with gator now. However, I want to move my prestashop installations in European host, guess they will benefit speed and response times....
