Alter search text

Dear Forum,

I am in the process of learning prestashop and so far have made great progress. One thing that confuses me though is can i change the html output of things like the search box in my template. For example I might prefer not to use the word search but simply use an image with a search icon instead. I can do it by changing files like modules/blocksearch-header.tpl but this would not be a good idea as this file is outside my template and it would be considered bad practise.

In drupal for example I can override defaults by adding my own mini templates files i wondered if such a thing exists for prestashop.

in prestashop, modules and theme is a packet, although we think this is bad design in web programming, i think website owner rarely change the structure / design of their website.
