PrestaShop is number one, but...

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

I am writing this post hoping that someone with influence at PrestaShop will read it.
I have spent the past week or so installing and testing several shopping carts and shopping scripts (mini carts you could say).

Among them, I have installed some osCommerce variants (Zen / CRE), Magento, PrestaShop and a few others that were so bad that I dont even remember or care to mention.

When I finally found Presta, I was very VERY happy - the cart looks beautiful, the admin panel is smooth and makes sense, and everything looks exactly as I want it.
Even when I sniffed inside the PHP code, to see how I do some minor changes - I felt it is easy enough.

Despite that, I found myself looking for another solution other than Presta.
I gotta say - I did not find anything thats getting even close to the comfort level I have with Presta.

But here is the big BUT.

1. I feel that there is a shortage of an organized modules library. One that is written in English, and is NOT a forum page.

2. It is not clear to me if the modules that I find here and there on the forum are going through any certification process by more senior Presta developers. I mean I know this is a community product, but even so, I think that critical modules, like payment modules, should be in some way approved by a development group.

3. Despite all the efforts of some kind community members here, I feel that there is lack of support. Even simple questions in the forum, like "does presta support this or that" are often left unanswered.

4. Finally, I feel that there is a severe shortage in payment modules. Personally, I wanted to connect to 2CO, so luckily there is a module that looks good here, but I am not so confident in building an entire business around it.

So, I guess my bottom line is:
Presta for me is number one, based on my testings, and I very much hope that the community here will get more supportive and that the product development will pick up some slack in the very few weak areas that it has (at least as I see them).

I someday, hope to be able to be on the "helping side" of the community balance, but for now, I am more struggling to get answers.

Thanks for reading and I hope Presta becomes recognized as #1 by the rest of the world (this will mean that these issues were resolved :) )

1. Yes Prestashop could really use an Official module page similiar to that of OsCommerce's.

2. Modules have always been "use at your own risk" for many ecommerce platforms, Osc, Magento, etc.

3. That complaint can be said about a lot of communities. I've been a Magento member since 1.0 and the complaints were the same. Even on the Osc forums. The problem is that a lot of people come on and ask the same questions over and over and over again without even trying to search for the answers and help themselves. I respond to a lot of questions when I can but sometimes all it takes is a search and the answer is right there.

4. Prestashop is still in it's infancy, so you have a point there... but you've obviously never used the first versions of Osc, Sprite Store, etc. The same could be said about them as well. Especially those created outside the US. Magento is honestly one of the few open source carts that launched with a wide range of shipping and payment options. ZenCart and Cre don't really count since they were forks of OscCommerce.

Prestashop is still young.. but it's definitely improving....

Hey Hoodgrown,

Thanks for the reply. I totally agree.
The little I saw on the other cart communities, is definitely not better.

The big difference is that Presta is much much nicer than the other carts, and I think has a lot of potential, so as it is still young, I figured this would be a good time to raise some flags that may help shape its future.

Imagine Presta with a top notch supporting community, with an excellent official modules directory and with well documented, well supported payment modules? Can anyone in the market beat that? The resource-hog Magento cannot, the old-fashioned, messy osCommerce variants cannot.

So this post was more of a hope to get someone at Presta think along these lines.
It was not a complaint, but a prayer... :)

look at his Peugot car, a glass of wine in a hand and a croissant in the other. "Well, 'Guess I'm unknown."

Oh, And I support the points Number 1, 2 and 4.
