Desktop view completely empty but mobile shows all products..?

I did a fresh install of Prestashop 1.5.2 then a database import.

 

I uploaded all image files to the img/p folder.

 

I edited ps_configuration, the settings.inc.php file .. and set the base directories in the backoffice under SEO/URL.

 

The backoffice shows all products, categories, etc.

 

However, with either the default theme OR the custom theme I'm using:

1. the desktop version has no menus, etc ... no products .. BUT
   
2. the mobile view has all products, etc.
   

Any ideas appreciated. I am pretty stumped as to the reason the desktop view would be entirely missing data while the mobile view is fully populated.
