PS decided to rename all of the images on the new default theme to "home_default", "large_default" instead of "home", "large" etc. Check the path of the images that you are missing (right click > inspect element in Google Chrome). Regen the images that you are missing. This could also be a problem with the friendly URL. If you have upgraded, the .htaccess file gets messed up. Long story short, set friendly URL and canonical to "No", delete .htaccess. Go back into BO and re-enable friendly and canonical. Let me know how you get on.
