Directory restricted - giving 404?

Hello,

 

I'm new to prestashop and just taken a site over from someone else.

 

Does prestashop override manually created directories (folders) so you can't install your own scripts?

 

I tried to do so and get a 404 error when trying to access it.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciaqted.
