Americanize Prestashop

Recommended Posts

I have to admit...I have a LOVE/HATE relationship with Prestashop. The software is mostly mostly top notch cool but man, some things bug the tar out of me when trying to set this thing up for US retail. Just the differences between France or whatever country this thing was designed to run for. Things like the address format. The wording of things. The lower case on titles in places, Form fields out of order, etc, etc, etc. I have spent quite a few hours normalizing my site for US use. Don't get me wrong. I might be venting a little but there is also a sense of accomplishment taking a cool product that isn't totally perfect for you but making it much better with a little hard work and good people on a Forum. I've found so many fixes for little piddly stuff on here. I want to thank everyone for all that they have done and will continue to do. My shop is coming a long well and I'm in love with other shops out there like hoodgrown's Petsright. He has put a lot of time in his shop and probably knows exactly what I am talking about. I am sure there are other American shops also.

If any other fellow American's who check out my site and like anything I've done with the basic templates as far as wording, etc. Feel free to ask me. There is no need to re-invent the weel.... Ok, end of my late night rant!

Thanks guys

For those of you who are interested in Quasi-Guest Checkout, feel free to test out the one i am working on at http://www.glasswaredreams.com and report any weird things to me. So far some of the features include, removal of Your Account links/block when a guest has created an account. If they try to go to the "my-account.php page" it will throw up an error. The guest process does not use a cookie. When they Choose "Express Checkout", create the account, a 1 is entered in a guest field in the customer database. This is then used by the "blockuserinfo" block to hide the "My Account" link and then also for the Your Account block that appears. It will see that the user is a guest and not display it. I plan on using this for some back office features also, still to come. I plan to share this work.

Anyways, just rambling, have a good weekend.

Very nice website Ion_Cannon, I really like the clean layout of your shop. How did you make your menu on the left get highlighted when the curor hovers over it?

That is the sliding categories module: http://www.prestashop.com/forums/viewthread/11279/modules/jquery_sliding_navigation_v1_dot_0

Just modified the CSS file for hover colors to the colors needed. Worked like a champ.

Thanks, that works almost 100%. I only have one issue with it and was wondering if you came across it also. One of my categories looks scrambled (see picture) it actually has what appears to be other text behind my category name. the word behind my category name is "Holders". I tried deleting that category name to see if it would disapear but it continues on onto the next category name.

Any thoughts on whats causing this??

Hm.. never saw that issue. I don't have as many categories so it might have something to do with that. It's probably a css issue but I cannot say for sure without looking at it.

Thanks for help. I will try and locate the problem. I found out that the word behind the category name is "Holders". I made a scan search for that word through Dreamweaver on my computer and came up empty. I will have to download the complete site into my computer then do another complete search for that word and see where its located.

Did a scan and found the problem. The category name just before the category name that was giving me a hard time had a category name that was too long. The last word "Holders" was from a category named 'Candles, Scents & Candle Holders". Evidently when a category name is too long it carries over onto the next category. All I did to correct the problem was rename that long category to something shorter, in my case "Candles, Scents & Holders". Maybe in the future a work around can be found for this bug.

This is my contribution to the Americanization of PrestaShop (PS).

The only language active in your PS is English.

By default, there are 34 countries included in the PrestaShop distribution. To expand that list of countries, do the following:

1. Backup your MySQL PS database, just in case.

2. Login to PS Manager/Admin (what is called Back Office) >> Shipping >> Zones and add Caribbean. Also, change US to America

The Zones should look like this:

1. Europe
2. America
3. Asia
4. Africa
5. Oceania
6. Caribbean

By default PS adds the prefix ps_ during the setup process and creation of tables in the database
Assuming that you are using ps_ prefix, use PhpMyAdmin application to:

3. Download and unzip the attached archive: ps_country.zip.
The ps_country.zip contains 4 files: three (3) MySQL tables and README which is a copy of the instructions given in this response.
Using WordPad Text editor (do not use NotePad), change the following line in the three (3) MySQL files respectively with the name of your database:

From:
-- Database: `ENTER_YOUR_DB_NAME_HERE`

To (for example):
-- Database: `ScottMeyers`

Save and Exit the files.

4. Use PhpMyAdmin to drop the following three (3) tables:
ps_state, ps_country, and ps_country_lang

5. Import the attached MySQL files, one by one.

6. Scroll down the page: Back Office >> Shipping >> Countries and select your country in the Countries options.

DONE!

This is for English based PS only. This list works on PS v1.1 and v1.2 (beta).

Is it possible to get a copy, please? If so, how and where?

Thanks

Great tips but the shop I am running will not be shipping outside of the US for now. I don't need any other languages at the moment. I might add Spanish eventually. These tips are great for other shops though. Thanks!

Really nice interface. Can you make it available as a theme so that other users can download and install it as a custom theme without digging through codes? You know most of people are not programmers with little knowledge in the codes used. Thanks a lot. Also, do you use shipping carrier (FedEx) API in your shipping configuration?

I also hope there'll be a central deposit available on PrestaShop download site for custom themes and modules, similar to Drupal's download pages for themes and modules. At the present all of these contributed themes or modules scattered around in the forum are difficult for people to find.

This is one of the cleanest, easiest to navigate shops on the 'net! Wow. I really like it.

Just had to say that.

your 'Add to Cart' is not working in Ajax for FF 3.0.11. I suggest you disable Ajax in add to cart, in modules, configuration

FF 3.0.11 is a piece of crap.. I'm not doing ANYTHING to work around that piece of junk. LOL

I've been using the eventual Firefox.. 3.5 RC3. It's awesome so far. You can get it here:

Haha, yeah I did not like 3.0.11, thankfully it is gone already with the 3.5 release....

What files do you edit to switch the order of the date dropdowns at checkout?

Currently, PS uses the day, month, year setup verses the month, day, year like in the US. This caught me the first time I did a test order. And then the 2nd time too ;)

If you could point me toward the file(s) that need edited to change this, it'd be appreciated. Thanks.

Express Checkout is one of the best free mods here on Prestashop...thanks Ion_Cannon!

Took me about 5 mintues to do the simple mods and get it working the first time I tried it...Awesome!

Here is the build link with the zip files for 1.1x and 1.2x versions on the first post.

Agreed, and a big thank you to Ion_Cannon for all the work he has done!!!!
Do you use a FedEx API to calculate actual shipping or is it based on zones?
I am currently using the UPS and USPS modules but they still have some minor bugs.
An all in one, UPS, USPS, FedEx, and express checkout would be the ultimate American module.

PS: Please check out our site and see how you like it.
