Please define the word "Stable"

Recommended Posts

I'm in my fourth day of "upgrading" to 1.5.1 and I deeply regret bothering. It's been and continues to be extremely frustrating and I'll mistrust any future use of the word "stable". I've tried to contact support directly but got no reply after 50 hours. Anyway, I suppose a rant won't help. Here is what I'm currently struggling with (after painfully fixing other stuff).

ANY help would be deeply appreciated.

  • I can't find CMS. The block has disappeared. There is a list of the CMS pages in admin but the view and edit links don't work.
  • I have two carriers, one is collection and the other is delivery. Very simple, collection is free and delivery is 5 euros. Whatever is in the cart and whatever carrier is selected the cart states "Remaining amount to be added to your cart to get free shipping:1,00 €" What is that???
  • Optimisation tips (configuration checklist) won't open in admin homepage.
  • Deleting a block in live edit doesn't delete the block (even after force compile and refresh).

Please help, my eyes are sore after very many hours of trying to get my sites back to working smoothly again.

Cheers,

Malcolm

Hi Malcom, I am not from Supoprt, but share your pain :)

I suppose stable can only ever refer to a fresh install on a compatible server blah blah blah. Other than that, Prestashop is so configurable that it cannot be suitable to every single installation

Seems you have reverted back to an earlier version so at least you are working

It is hard to make suggestions as your site is now back as it was. And there is nor gaurentee that if you try the upgrade those issues will still be there

How did you do the upgrade? Manual or 1-click upgrade or Softaculous?

Always take a good back up before starting, but also think whether you need to upgrade. Is there some of the new features you need?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I am upgraded to 1.5.1 and I've worked hard to get it into some sort of shape but I still have these problems....

It so does not look like 1.5: I assume you kept the 1.4 theme?

For the CMS block have a look in Modules > Positions to see where the block is hooked (if at all) You may need to use Transplant a module to hook it to the left or right column. I assume the default is like this, because "they" assume you will use CMS in either the new horizontal menu or footer options (It is probably hooked there now)

Deleting a block in live edit. Not sure, but you may need to actually delete the cache for it to work. However I have seen some forum posts about problems with live edit so have a look (Search live edit on this forum)

Optimisation tips: Does that matter? You can go straight to Advanced Parameters > performance (Do you get an error message?)

Carriers: Have you checked Shipping > Shipping? There is a free shipping starts at value there

Now the server is a quad core 2ghz and 8gb ram dedicated server.

Now with the problems I am facing

1. The add to cart button is not working at once, neither with ajax nor without. After waiting for 2 minutes the product is finally added to cart. After using the site for 5 minutes it becomes very sluggish. This problem has made us earn ZERO rupees today

2. the CMS content is a big issue as its not displayed in backend or frontend.

Kindly note that We have upgraded from PS 1.4.6 to 1.5.1. The upgrade faced no issues and was done in the Manual format.

kindly note that the admin page is also not VISIBle correctly.

CAN SOMEONE LISTEN AND HELP US

@swikaar

Have you tried the CMS solution I gave above?

Site seem very slow - more slow than a simple upgrade could have caused. Have you got all the optimisation settings sorted (Advanced Parameters > Performance)?

Many thanks for your help Ron. I'll try all of your suggestions and report back. BTW, yes I kept the 1.4 theme.

Dear Benjamin, people are having serious and very frustrating problems here. Is that all the Prestashop team has to contribute to this thread?

The CMS block is hooked to the right column. I tried transplant and the result confirmed that this module is already hooked to right column. It does not show on the site. Trying to get to any CMS page by any other means doesn't work. The links don't work.

Sure, my point is it worked in 1.4.x and 1.5.1 is supposed to be an upgrade, an advance. It's not beta either, it's offered as stable. I wouldn't have upgraded to a beta.

Optimisation tips: Does that matter? You can go straight to Advanced Parameters > performance (Do you get an error message?)

It doesn't matter in the same way that it doesn't matter if I buy a car with GPS and the GPS doesn't work. I can still find my way home. It's just another example of the annoying use of the word "stable". Please don't hit me with Prestashop being free. My time isn't free, the loss of business isn't free and I've spent on modules too.

Carriers: Have you checked Shipping > Shipping? There is a free shipping starts at value there

Yes I have and those values are set to zero to disable it. Where does prestashop then find "you are 1 euro away from free shipping"?

I appreciate your help Ron. I'd like to see more from the Prestashop team. I've always quietly got on with my work. Prior to this "upgrade" I think I'd made on post in many months but now I'm losing my business.

You can't use 1.4.x theme in 1.5.x its completely incompatible, probably most of your errors comes from there.

Also it is best not to upgrade from 1.4.x to 1.5.x but make a new install to 1.5.x and import your data.

However if you don't use multi-shop feature, why you are so rush to upgrade? 1.5.x is far from stable in my opinion. E-commerce is a serious bussines not a blog platform, you should be careful and sure that you need to upgrade.

Who said that and where please?

Me as a developer, and PrestaShop's 1.5.x documentation - see the quote from http://doc.prestashop.com/display/PS15/Changes+in+version+1.5+which+impact+theme+development

"A lot has changed between the Theme API in PrestaShop 1.4 and the one available in version 1.5. Wholes sections have been rewritten while others have been added, mostly to take into account new features from PrestaShop 1.5, such as the cart rules system et the partial delivery/multishipping one.

But in general, it is highly advisable not to adapt a 1.4 theme to PrestaShop, but rather start with the default theme and adapt your HTML and CSS files to it. This way, you will ensure that all the new features from PrestaShop 1.5 will be included in your theme out of the box."

No rush but the word stable was encouraging. I truly wish I hadn't.

You should check bug tracker, 790 issues with PS 1.5.x, many of them unresolved important ones, compare this number to the 123 issues on 1.4.x and you will get your "stable" define :D

Firstly I have no idea how to clear my database. I backed up some time ago and I'll need to search for the backup. What would the file name loo like? Is it a.zip or .tar.gz or other? If and when I do re-instate 1.4.9 I'll stay with it. I wish I'd not upgraded in the first place. I just want to roll back.

Is it possible to download version 1.4.9 clean from anywhere?

Hello, I do understand your disappointment, you better install your 1.4.x version from your backup files .

If you want to download previous version than the 1.5.1 STABLE version here are the download list for developpers : http://www.prestashop.com/en/developers-versions

and here is the 1.4.9 package download >> http://www.prestashop.com/download/old/prestashop_1.4.9.0.zip

enjoy :P

stable is and stable does...

I feel for your predicament but one of my fav song's when I find myself in similar circumstances is "It's Nobodies Fault but your own", by Led Zepplin.

....if you don't back up then you must suck it up and go forward. If you can't fix it then you need to get someone to help you...

sometime we try to save a buck and end up spending 50 hours or more on something that another can do in 22 seconds...you will have to determine your own threshold of pain...:)

Like i said, just use your 1.4.x backups, contact your theme developer and ask them for update, wait a bit and i;m sure PrestaShop will polish the things out so you can upgrade.

Don't experiment on your live shop, from your backup create separate shop, then install and test new versions. Don't be so eager to upgrade to new versions, upgrade only when its required or you pretty sure that is stable release and you are happy, there is always risk of bugs this is how development works, and you don't want your clients to be beta testers :)

Great advice, which unfortunately I have never managed to achieve. I don;t suppose you can give a step by step on how to create a separate shop using backups? I can never get it to work on or offline (

Well, basically you just need to copy your PrestaShop folder and backup the database, import the database to the new test database, after then open your folder config inside PrestaShop and edit settings.inc.php to correspond the new database and location and that's it. I may missing something but there is documentation and info both on PrestaShop website and forums about it.
