How to set-up the specials tab into all my main categories

Hello everyone,

 

I am using 1.4.9 with a customized theme. I want to set-up the specials tab in my top menu and then when I place a product on sale it's seperated by that category.

 

I own a pet store so the main categories are dog, cat, fish, birds, reptiles and small animals

 

I want to set up another category by all animals so when I place it on sale it automatically send it to this special section. All this categories will also have all the same sub-categories but the only difference will be I will use the meta tags in a different way such as Discounted Dog Supplies etc.

 

Pretty much I know I can make the sales category then make all the sub-categories by animal but I am just wondering is there an easier way of doing this.

 

I will also be implementing this with top rated products and new products as well.

 

If anyone can give me kind of the best way to have this implemented that would be great.
