phrasespot
Support for 1.3 was cut off (including bug fixes) as soon as version 1.4 was released. At the time I made a lot of noise and objections with zero effect. I am hoping this is not going to be the case with 1.5 relase as there are still a lot of unfixed, serious 1.4 bugs in the tracker. Can someone form PS please make a statement about the plans for 1.4 series to enable merchants/developers to make future plans? We must have an EOL time for 1.4 so we can plan for 1.5 upgrades where necessary. Or if the support for 1.4 is already dropped on 1.5 release we need to know that too. guest*
+1. The last 3 days only working on the buggy 1.5.0.17 version. On German Forum the users were expecting 1.5. with the special modules to comply German Laws. Now all disappointed because it is not on board and no upgrade possible without any problems, rollback the same. As I wasn't able to do any upgrade with this 1-click upgrade module, not for 1.4. and also not for 1.5. I'm writing that this is normal and please do upgrades only manually after backing-up your files. Perhaps this module does not work on all webspaces. It is strange that for some it works and for others not. Also the release was a surprise, so users asking things, which nobody can answer, me included... For the German Forum it would be great if some super-moderator opens there a section for 1.5. We are mixing all postings and making a great chaos on the support. Perhaps this is a good idea also for other community forums ?

I totally agree with both of you. They should be letting everyone know about these types of changes being made. I am not happy to see that I just upgraded to 1.4.9 then in 2 days this 1.5 is in my admin panel. Not HAPPY because I have spent time and money with theme and now this>>>> My biggest concern for Prestashop is please do NOT drop support for 1.4 like Prasespot said about 1.3. If support goes away so do the customers. It would be foolish to upgrade a website version if you're not having issues.... Thomas Didierjean
Hi, I'm not sure on the exact timeline but I can tell you that there will be at least 6 more months of support for version 1.4. Regards, Thomas

Regards, Thomas so you plan on doing away with support for 1.4 when there's still bugs??? Are you all serious? Thomas so if we decide not to upgrade our versions of 1.4 to 1.5 because we are not experiencing any and the support is dropped what happens, do all of you who designed the software just forget about issues and the people who use it? Regards, Thomas Thomas, thanks for the reply. It is a great relief to hear that at least another 6 months of support for the version 1.4. This will give everyone a chance to plan for an orderly upgrade to 1.5 to reap the advantages it offers over 1.4.

As a business owner and spending tons of time and money to get my site up using 1.4 and now this is very upsetting. I understand there may be better advantages to use 1.5 but to just do away with 1.4 is not right.
phrasespot
Clayton I think there is a misunderstanding, You do not have to upgrade to 1.5. I for one will not be upgrading every 1.4 installation to 1.5. I think 1.4 is perfectly OK. The shops I will be upgrading to 1.5 are the ones that desperately need the functionality introduced in 1.5. If you were to come to me today as a new client, unless you needed e.g. cart rules, I would still recommend we go with 1.4, and provide support for it for the foreseeable future. As for EOLing 1.4. Software is eventually retired even if a lot of users are still using it (MS XP anyone). There comes a point it does not make sense to allocate development resources to it. In this case I am happy that we have more time before it is EOLed following a later release unlike 1.3 to 1.4 transition.

Hey Prasespot, That makes more sense to me. may I ask though what if there starts to be a huge issue and there's no support for this issue anymore will I not have a choice but only to upgrade. May I ask what are these cart rules you're speaking about. I have never seen a demo of it as I have spent the last year building my website and is finally almost complete and have put in thousands of hours into this store of mine. Yes I do understand software is retired but with it just coming out with a new version and only 2 days in between they ask to upgrade to 1.5 which is unacceptable timing I think. If I have to pay my IT guys every week to do an upgrade in this type of manner. I I have a site manager for the store and he can fix issues but if there's something he doesn't know is what I am worried about. I am happy that I know I have at least 6 more months. From the looks of it 1.5.0.17 is not even stable to use seeing that so many users are reverting back to 1.4.9. Can I ask how long is it before this version is stable or usually takes? Thanks for your reply Edited September 16, 2012 by clayton29657 (see edit history)
phrasespot
may I ask though what if there starts to be a huge issue and there's no support for this issue anymore will I not have a choice but only to upgrade. When a release (1.4) is at the end of its lifecycle it is very unlikely that there will be huge issues with it. It has been in use for a long time by a lot of people under myriad of conditions. That is not to say there will be no bugs left but anything left should be minor, un-producible in every install or the similar nature. I am willing to bet 1.4.x will be a lot more stable than 1.5 will be for the next 12 weeks or so. May I ask what are these cart rules you're speaking about. I have never seen a demo of it as I have spent the last year building my website and is finally almost complete and have put in thousands of hours into this store of mine. It is a nifty feature introduced in 1.5 which I think will solve a variety of things. But unless you feel the lack of it in your current installation there is no reason you should upgrade to 1.5 for the sake of having it. Yes I do understand software is retired but with it just coming out with a new version and only 2 days in between they ask to upgrade to 1.5 which is unacceptable timing I think. The 1.4 and 1.5 developments are separate branches and have different release schedules. It was unlucky timing that two branches had releases so close. 1.5.0.17 does not override 1.4.9.0 release. More like 1.4.9.0 is an improvement on 1.4.8.2 while 1.5.0.17 is an improvement on 1.5.0.15. Two releases are unrelated. If I have to pay my IT guys every week to do an upgrade in this type of manner. I have a site manager for the store and he can fix issues but if there's something he doesn't know is what I am worried about. I am happy that I know I have at least 6 more months. That is the thing. You do not have to. Stick with 1.4.9.0 if you are happy with your store. If you are told otherwise ask for a justification that makes sense to you and in terms of RoI. If/when a 1.4.9.1 is released which fixes a bug your store suffers from then consider updating to it. From the looks of it 1.5.0.17 is not even stable to use seeing that so many users are reverting back to 1.4.9. Can I ask how long is it before this version is stable or usually takes? No, of course it is not. Compared to 1.4 it has only been used by a handful of people in real production situations. Anyone who expected anything different is a dreamer. Now it is out, the more people use it on diverse environments, the more bugs will be discovered that could not be discovered by any tests during development, reported, fixed. Let the experimentation with 1.5 to the cutting-edge lovers, hobbyist merchants and developers. How long it will take it to be production stable (not PS marketing propaganda stable, but tested in the trenches stable) is anyone's guess at this point. I would not go near it for relying on it as the source of my main income at least until I see a 1.5.1 release and then at that time I would re-evaluate. clayton29657
Thank you for all this information you have provided to me. It makes a lot more sense now than just saying we are doing away with support. I was about to go insanely nuts here after I spent all this time and money into this online store. Lucky enough this isn't my main source I have 4 store as well but wanted to reach out to the online market as well, I do must say that the software is great/. I have only had minor issues with my store so guess I am lucky and my site manager and it guys are awesome. Site speed is awesome to so no no complaints and if anyone ask if prestashop can handle a larger store I would say most definitely as mine opens home page in .22 sec which I think is very good. Yes I will leave the headaches to figure the 1.5. versions but in the mean time can someone provide me with a demo and back end access so I can test it out or should I have my guys download it on my test sever? Thank you Prasespot for providing all this info to me. I do appreciate it very much Clayton
phrasespot
can someone provide me with a demo and back end access so I can test it out or should I have my guys download it on my test sever? I reckon this will be changed soon to showcase 1.5. Until then get your awesome site manager/IT guys to install a test copy in a subdomain of your domain and play with it to your heart's content Edited September 16, 2012 by phrasespot (see edit history)
