Autoupgrade not working (can't even INSTALL the module)

I have 2 stores to upgrade, and would like to use the autoupgrade function this time.

 

However, in one forum, I cannot install the module. I downloaded the latest version from prestashop, and uploaded it two different ways (within the backoffice, and uploaded via ftp)

 

When I click "Install" I get the following message:

 

 

The following module(s) were not installed successfully:

• autoupgrade
  

No more details are given, so I have no idea what went wrong.

 

On my other store, it simply doesn't show up on the modules list. That one is older though (1.4.8.2)

OK so I CHMOD'ed the ENTIRE Prestashop folder recursively to get it to work. This seems like a horrible idea, so if there is a list of proper folder permissions, I'd love to see it.. thanks!
