Validation when downloading an attachment

I hope to post this in the right place, if not sorry about it.

I am trying to do something but I don't manage to do it.

 

My store sells magazines, if you purchase it we sent you a hard copy of it but also you can download it from the website, I had the soft copy as an attachment for each product.

 

What I want to add is that if you are not logged in you should enter you e-mail address, country and mark a checkbox in order to keep your email to send you newsletters. If you do so, you will be able to download any attachment. To do this I would like to have a session variable or modify the cookie in order to avoid making the user input his email every time he wants to download something. If he puts his email once I keep it into my database and create the session variable.

 

Any one know something about it? I find really hard the related stuff about the variable and maybe there is a module that does it or a better way to do it.
