markjl
Hello. Apparently my ISP wont install Memcached (something as a suggested install in the dashboard to combine compress and cache) for me because it crashes their servers.

bellini13
i wouldn't bother with it. any prestashop version I have used with memcache received minimal performance enhancements, and resulted in inconsistent and odd behavior from the store. sickz
Well I can't share that opinion. Our Sitespeed went from 1.3~s to 0.9-1s and no strange behavior at all...
markjl
Find a new hoster? Bit drastic. Especially as changing hoster is barely feasible in terms of workload and I'm quite pleased with my hoster (hosteur.com). I am concerned about Internal Server 500 issues though. Could this be related? Edited August 19, 2012 by markjl (see edit history)

I am concerned about Internal Server 500 issues though. Could this be related? Well it's not drastic. You either have to change your hoster or you have to change to a VPS/Dedicated Server. Some hoster might look good on paper or theire website but theire service and the options aviable (like memcache, apc etc.) are horrible. Most hoster suit theire packages for a large amount of customer and options like memchace, apc, php_memory limit the amount of customer per server, they actually don't give a shit about one less. Maybe you should look for a VPS/Dedicated Server or a hoster with specific options and limited customer per server (1-20 is a good amount) specific php_memory, timeout time etc. As example for the upcoming 1.5 you should have atleast 128mb. About your Internal Server Error this can have many issues. Your shop self (bad module etc.) or your hoster. You should check your error logs. markjl
OK I conclude that if I want Memcache, it will have to be on a dedicated server. As example for the upcoming 1.5 you should have atleast 128mb. About your Internal Server Error this can have many issues. Your shop self (bad module etc.) or your hoster. You should check your error logs. What is the upcoming 1.5 ? I looked at the logs, nothing there at all. There must be an option for turning on logging then. estefana
mmm memcache. Please pardon a newbie's input, but memcache is evidently a must-have for prestashop. It is not required to have a dedicated server, though, because bluehost* has memcache with shared hosting. *not 100 % verified at this time. just going on their reassurances ... bellini13
bluehost does not support memcache. i left them for that reason.

Does everyone feel that this Memcache thing speeds up the site? Currently, speed doesn't seem to be an issue, more the Internal Server Errors (no logs available)
bellini13
i think it will depend on several factors the version of prestashop you use your hosting server the os version, php version and memcache version for me, it offered no benefit in performance. and once enabled I started experience random/unexplainable issues, that went away once disabled. estefana
bluehost does not support memcache. i left them for that reason. Correct. After being assured that all of their servers do indeed support memcache, I signed up with bluehost.com. LIARS. I have now wasted another three days. Can someone tell me where to go to get some hosting that will make it so that a prestashop installation will properly load and run? Surely that is not too much to ask of a hosting provider. webhostinghub was bad but at least they weren't liars. I don't think prestashop should recommend bluehost because they LIE. Maybe I need a better shopping cart.
bellini13
well, prestashop will properly load and run without memcache, it is not required, nor do I believe that using it will give you any significant performance increase. in fact I believe it may even give you more head aches then you have now. I also believe you will have a difficult time finding any shared hosting plan that will provide you with memcache. It is not something suitable to a shared hosting environment. If you are interested in virtual dedicated hosting that would support memcache, send me a PM and I can provide more details.
estefana
I never actually wanted memcache. It was just something in the admin panel that was giving out a warning, and I had a serious problem with my shop [not having a header or a footer; only the logo and a bluegray line] so I tried to get memcache from webhostinghub and then bluehost. Bluehost assured me that it would be no problem at all to have memcache. They said it was already installed! But, as soon as I loaded a new prestashop, same story as [ ] above. I asked Bluehost to fix it, they declined. They're liars and that's that. All I really want is to upload my own prestashop [no simple scripts, no scriptaculous] to a server and have it LOAD and WORK. I don't even have any idea what memcache is, or what it does, or what it might do. Where in the world is there a simple shared hosting that will LOAD and RUN Prestashop?
