Shop unusable after Prestashop upgrade

I just manually upgraded to 1.4.8.3 and my shop is now unusable -- I can't get into the shop itself and I can't get into admin.

 

If I visit the shop (using Google Chrome), I get the error message "This web page has a redirect loop". (That is a browser generated message, so other browsers will produce a different message). Although I changed __PS_BASE_URI__, it still seems to be trying to access the /upgrade/ directory (which is where I uploaded the new version to).

 

If I try to log in as admin, I am silently redirected back to the log in page -- no error message of any sort.

 

HELP! Our shop is shut.

 

Update:

 

I have manually restored the shop to the previous version. This is the same nightmare as my previous attempt to upgrade Prestashop -- the version we are on won't allow

autoupgrade and the manual upgrade leaves the shop unusable.

Hello mantradesign. I would first go restore your shop using your back up file you created before you attempted to upgrade. Then you can try the update process again.
