Left and right panels missing when viewing site with a mobile

Hi all this is my first post on this forum but have been using it a good bit to find solutions for problems which has been great but I am unable to find anything on this strangely so am I the only one?

 

My site appears to load up correctly without any issues however when I try to view the site using IE9 on a mobile phone the homepage seems fine but outside this the left and right panels vanish so the site becomes useless as shopping cart etc is gone.

 

I am using IE8 but I have used an IE9 test program which shows my site to load up correctly so I assume its the mobile phone and not just an IE9 issue?

 

I have read there are apps to make your site more compatible with mobile phones etc but I thought your site should load up through IE without any issues on a mobile device am I wrong?

 

If I am wrong hopefully can anyone recommend a free module to install that would make it more compatible?
