New product no default category option

I'm setting up a new install of Prestashop v.1.4.8.2. Everything looked great until I went to add products.

 

When adding a new product, on the 'Info' tab under 'Default Category' I have no category options in the drop down other than 'Home'. The sample categories plus several others I have added show on the catalog page, but they aren't available when adding a product. Does anyone have any ideas about what may be causing this? For now I can work around it by editing the database manually to assign the correct category, but it's an extra step and takes some time.
