SuperCharlie
I think the host depends a lot on how much you are willing to pay and what type of downtime and performance is acceptable. I have been with Hostgator as a reseller for around 3 years. The Aluminum plan has allowed me to host around 15 or so sites for various clients for ~ $29/month, by the month. It is basically a share hosting plan that allows me to create accounts and cpanels. I havent had much performance issues in general, but I do have some uptime issues. The step below this is general shared hosting for ~$5-$10 a month.. the next step up is VPS which runs around $80 a month for anything worth having and then a dedicated server and then cloud hosting. In general, you pay more for performance and uptime. I looked into rackspace and a few others and decided the pricepoint to benefit (uptime/performance) wasnt worth it to me yet. I have a client who uses inmotion hosting with very good uptime..but they require at least 6 months at a time and are more expensive..but ya get better uptime and performance in general. The question you have to ask yourself is first, how much can you afford in a lump sum, or how much can you afford monthly. That answer will cut a lot of options off the table. If it is less than $50 a month you are probably into shared hosting. $50-$100 and youre in VPS, >$100 and you decide between dedicated server, heavy VPS or light cloud. >$200 and you do dedicated or cloud. With each increase in cost, you increase, in general, you performance and stability. Where Im at I get a couple burps a month, a long burp every couple months, and decent performance in general. I also get to create cpanels at will..which is very useful for me. I would recommend.. Low end: Hostgator excellent service. Mid Road: Inmotion High End: Rackspace There are a lot of providers who are good, but it boils down to the infrastructure and the cost as well as the support. Shared is shared, VPS is VPS..etc.. there are of course evil pits of hell like Godaddy...but a night reading reviews and chatting support should weed out a lot of the bad ones. Good luck.
