1.4 Customization Gripe

I have a gripe. Maybe there is a fix or workaround.

 

So I have a product that is $10 as is or for $2 you can add some text. I add a product with 2 combinations, primary as is, secondary customized +$2. Add a text field.

 

So the client selects customized, it adds 2 bucks, they fill in the text and click save, the page flops, comes back with the default combo of uncustomized (no $2) the client adds the product to cart and now I have a client who thinks they added a customized product however their cart says uncustomized with their text entered next to it and the price is wrong...bob.

 

This is a usability clusterf.

 

And no, I want the default to be as is.

 

Any ideas on how to make this better?
