[SOLVED] How setup state tax?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to setup my Florida State Tax, I have followed all the steps, but it won't work. If I go to a product and select tax rule, it works fine, but I want to add state tax to all of my products and I have more than 500 and would take forever. Is there a way to apply the state tax to ALL of my products and ONLY if you are buyer from Florida?

Thank you

Prestashop version: 1.4.8.2

Yes it is a long process of adding all the counties and the zip codes.

You will need to have the tax rules set so that only Florida residents are charges tax and then each county is charged the additional surtax. (watch the videos)

One issue you will run into is that there are zip codes that are in several counties and those counties have different surtaxes so I put those codes in the higher surtax county.

If you use notepad++ (free to download) you can paste all the codes by county into a text file and when you get the message that this zip is already in use you can highlight that zip in notepad and it will highlight every instance of that zip, makes it easy to find the other places that zip was entered.

There is a good tutorial here http://www.prestatraining.com/set-up-taxes-in-prestashop-v1-4/ If you follow along with the videos you will get it.

It took me several days to input all the counties and zip codes you can find all the county zip codes here:

http://florida.hometownlocator.com/zip-codes/counties.cfm

Happy Typing.

Thanks for the quick response, tdr170, and great videos, Curt Donohue is always very thorough. I finally got it to work by going into the catalog, selecting a product, and changing the tax rule to my tax rule, but it will not work in the cart without including the tax in the price. Curt demonstrates how to just show tax in the cart by going to: Payment/Taxes then select 'Display tax in cart', but it's not working for me?

I also thought the change would affect all my current products. So I have around 500 items, is there a way to make a global change, to all the products all at once? Curt mentions going back and changing each product! I hope that's not the only way?

Thanks again

Yes every product must have a state tax applied to it otherwise how would Pestashop know which tax to apply.

I have to run out for awhile today but I think I have a faster way to add tax to all the products, go to the frre modules and themes section and find the Mass Update module I have just posted V1.6 that has pagination.

I believe I can add a tax rules group to this so all you would need to do is add 1 (9) number to each and save all at once.

I will message you later with an updated file to upload to the module, for now download and install, there will be a link to it under the Catalog menu.

I have also found that unless you are logged in the cart will not show tax because it needs a zip to now what tax to apply.

Here you go I have added the tax rules group to this so all you should have to do is enter the # 9 in the text box under tax rule.

I have tested and this will add Florida tax rule to your products.

Be sure to check under taxes or tax rules that your Florida tax rule is ID # 9.

Please let me know hoe this works for you.

OOOOOOOOOOops totally my fault I uploaded the standard mass update not the one I modified for you.

I have re-uploaded please download from above again, you really don't need to install just unzip the file to your computer and upload the AdminMassUpdate.php file to the modules folder overwriting the one that is there now.

IT WORKED!!! :D WOW tdr170 thank you so much.

And I can make mass changes to other important fields like QUANTITY, which was equally as time consuming. You don't know how much time this save me. Your awesome.

Have a great day, month, year, and life!

This might sound like a stupid question, but I'm new to all this, how do you add SOLVED to this post? I've seen it on other messages, but how did they do it?

Just edit your first post of the thread, and select "More Reply Options." There, you can change the title manually.

Hello, you did setup your sales for florida , that's sound good.

How about the sales taxes for the county you are in and if customer are from the same county ?

let me give you an example : if the shop is based in orlando florida, orange county where tax is : 6.5%

the rest of florida will be 6% and the rest of US 0%

o na previews version of prestashop i setup this gracefully.. it takes me time but it works.. now on tha 1.4.8.2 version, there is no way that a customer with the proper zip code (orange county) will get a 6.5% tax calculted.. it just keep on regular florida taxe so : 6%... is there a magic trick somewhere to activate it on the last release of presta ?

Best Regards

EDIT : OK i just found this topic > http://forge.prestashop.com/browse/PSCFI-4594

the problem still not solved it seeems

Actually that is incorrect Orange county is 6.5%, Desoto county is 7% and you need to charge each county the proper tax.

Florida had a surtax meaning that each county adds an additional tax to the 6% State tax and they range from 0-1.5%.

So some counties do not add a surtax and are only 6% while others like Monroe are add 1.5% and charge 7.5%.

So watch the videos in post 2 and you will get it.

hello trd170, i know this tutorial and videos because i watched it before and it helped me to setup taxes correctly one year ago on a 1.4.5.3 prestashop version, but when i do the same on a 1.4.8.2 it is not working at all.. prestashop consider only states and do not care about zipcodes on the delivery adress or invoice, so there is only one flate rate by states, no county proper taxes are working since 1.4.6.2 it seems regarding to Forge bugtrackers messages.

Also, you mean that the taxes need to be calculated in a different way i mentionned it, it is different from my understanding and from what my local financial consultant explained : the taxes is based on the shop adress and the delivery adress, i will only consider my own case : shop is based on Orange county, Orlando , Florida.

_ if a customer is from Orlando , Orange County, he well be charged 6.5% tax (SHOP and Customer from the same County)

_ if a customer is from Florida, but not Orange county he well be charged 6% tax (regular Florida Tax) because my shop is not on his county I can't charge him more or less than what the flat rate for the state is. (SHOP and Customer not from the same County, but the Same State only)

_ if a customer is not from Florida, but still in US, he will not be charged for taxes !

So is this is all wrong ?

Best Regards

This is a topic of debate as our accountant told us that we must collect tax based on the county where the customer lives State + Surtax.

I have heard form others that you charge tax based on the county the business is in so if you live ina county with a 1% surtax you would charge everyone in Flroida 7%.

However the Florida Dept. Of Revenue says we are a delivery based state and this is what they say on how tax is to be collected.

http://dor.myflorida...cretionary.html

When and at What Rate to Collect Discretionary Sales Surtax (Local Option County Tax) on Taxable Sales

If a selling dealer located in any Florida county with a discretionary surtax sells & delivers into the county where the selling vendor is located surtax is collected at the county rate where thedelivery is made

If a selling dealer located in any Florida county with or without a discretionary surtax sells & delivers into counties with different discretionary surtax rates surtax is collected at the county rate where thedelivery is made

If a selling dealer located in any Florida county with or without a discretionary surtax sells & delivers into counties without a discretionary surtax surtax is not collected

I take this as I must charge tax based on the rate of the customers county.

I have 1.4.7 and taxes are set by county with the surtax and zip codes entered for each county, in my store you are charged tax based on what county in Florida you live. (out of state orders are not charged tax)

  • 2 months later...

I added a Link to the download page on the forum, please note that this module has nothing to do with taxes but is a way to update product info and prices in a mass update process.

What is the issue you face, how to charge Taxes in FL or how to set up taxes in Forida.

Thanks so much tdr170..

I haven't quite got to taxes just yet as I am close to finishing all product entries. Ive just been reading what seem like horror stories about Florida taxes and Prestashop so I guess I was hoping there has been an easier way developed. I am building a site for a Corporate client so I have no way of "cheating" taxes by charging 7% or any other way I have researched. Thanks for the reupload on the update process I will be tackling taxes very soon.

jmaybes, you might also want to consider a module called Avalara. Supposedly, the module takes care of all the hard work for you, and they update it regularly. I spoke to a gentlemen name Cleat, very knowledgable, they will assist you with installing and configuring the module as well. His phone: 503-747-7644.

Good luck

Thanks tdr170, I dont think I will be using the above simply because its amounts to a yearly contract with my client, not just a one time module purchase. Its a great module for many it seems, just not for my client. I viewed the instructional vids through the links you posted and you're right, doesnt seem to hard, but yes, time consuming. Im just running behind on this project because of the complicated combinations my client was in need of for products. But I appreciate everyones help here at the forums! I will be sure to let you know if I encounter any problems with taxes. Gotta say though, it a shame no one has developed a module with simple import of all the Florida tax rules!!! <_<
