Customer Registration Form

I really need to reduce the number of fields on the customer registration form.

 

I am selling downloadable products, and feel that asking customers for all the information that is required on the default form will affect my sales, because some potential customers will be put off.

 

So, I basically want to capture their first & last names, email address and country.

 

I have seen a few posts giving limited instructions on amending the authentication.tpl but I still don't fully understand how to achieve what I am looking for.

 

I would be MOST grateful if someone could help me out with some detailed instructions on how to do this.
