(Solved) EU directive, cookie control

Hello,

 

I was not sure where to post this so that is why it is here. I have also searched the forums and can find nothing.

 

On the 26th May 2011 an EU directive was passed that websites have to inform their visitors about cookies and give them the chance to opt out of cookie use, except in certain instances. A years grace was given to allow compliance so by the 26th of this month that directive has to be implimented. Well implimented by the only three countries that have done anything about it. Yes the UK is one of the three.

 

There is a ton of information out there but this sums it up: http://www.aboutcook...ult.aspx?page=3 So a way of implimenting this is needed for my prestashop shop. I have looked through add ons but can find nothing that would help. There is a script ot there at: http://www.civicuk.cookie-law/index but I would have no more idea than the man in the moon how to use/place that script in Prestashop.

 

So, anyone with any ideas of how to impliment this, before the 26th May 2012?

P.S. Telling people to control cookies through their browser settings is not an option, plus that will not control all types of cookies.

I have found the answer in the general forum on Prestashop (found through google, not this sites forum search) It does, in fact impliment the solution here: http://www.civicuk.com/cookie-law/index

 

Just got to figure out how to use it!

Adding the snippet is not a problem, but the biggest problem with this, or any similar snippet is that by the time that code runs you have the PrestaShop cookie in the users' machine. Not much point seeking user content _after_ adding the cookie. Of course if you just want to give the impression that you are complying then it is a solution

Thank you for your helpful comments. Whilst not doubting you I did visit the civic website, again, and it does set a cookie irrespective of the consent panel. So a waste of time. The same applies to the banner consent at http://michaelwright.me/cPrompt/ Hoewever I visited the ICO website and whilst their banner is ugly, to say the least, it does work. No cookie set until you consent. Perhaps they should make that available to all.

 

For my own part I think I will do this through a cms page with full explanation and instructions on how to set permissions for the various browsers. I know this is not strictly giving consent but it is the best I can come up.

 

It would be good if this consent could be given through an obvious browser tool.

True true. IMO a directive such as this is ridiclous as it expects websites to do what a browser should be doing in the first place, though cannot entirely blame it on the decison makers with the extreme lengths some entities will go to track one's online habits; it had to give in somewhere. Regardless we will have thousands of new, different UI elements in every website implementing it. What a mess.

As was the case with the previous example the cookies are on the machine before the consent is given, (albeit cleared if not). The directive is pretty specific that the consent must be obtained first.

Since you are quoting my post, I am assuming this marketing attempt is towards me. If that is the case, it is absurd. You will need to try someone else. I can build that module in my sleep,and even if I could not, I would not be buying a module from someone with a gmail address only.
