Can someone explain what is the difference between offline and online credit card payments?

I have found this

The shop owner can access this information in the back office for processing later (or 'offline') through their existing cash register system or credit terminal.

How is it processed through a credit terminal? I'm not into this field..

Most times it is manually punched in a terminal. They can also be saved and loaded in a batch to a virtual online terminal too.

But how do you manually validate a magnetic or chip card in a terminal if you don't have it physically at the pos ?

Hi core-,

When you manually input a credit card payment, you do it by the credit card number, not by the magnetic strip as you would by swiping in person.
