Seller of Module asking for FTP/admin login info (what do I do?)

Recommended Posts

Hi I recently purchased a slideshow module from the http://addons.prestashop.com/en/ shop. The module was developemed by the community.

Following installation I had some problems with getting the slideshow to work. I then conacted the seller via the addons site re the problem. I get an email back asking for FTP details, my URL and admin login info. I am not sure whether to pass this info on as I have my payment module set up and everything.

What do you guys recommend I do? thanks

I would set up a new employee with the access rights the developer needs. Send them the log in info and when they are done delete the employee.

If you contacted the developer through normal channels there is little risk of it being a hacker trying to wreck your site. That being said "Back Up EVERYTHING" before you give the log in info.

Hi dpatty,

This is normal for a developer trying to fix your site. However, it is always a good idea to back up everything on your site, both via FTP and the database itself.

And as Daniel said above, if you're not comfortable with this, you can create a separate employee account for the developer, but just make sure he has the permissions necessary to fix your issue.

I hope this helps.

thanks for the that. never crossed my mind

Still do not know why he wants FTP details (i.e. my host server info). I am a bit reluctant to do this - since he could just re-install the module from a file on his computer & install via Prestashop backoffice

There are legitimate reasons for FTP access. I have a module not recommended for the prestshop installer. Check your cpanel and create an account for that.

The developer is probably just trying to help and make it easy for himself. I wouldn't consider it too much to ask.

You can create a new FTP account for him from your cpanel, and restrict access only to the folder of the module.

As others suggested, it saves a lot of time debugging a module with FTP access, in fact, we require it when we get any support requests that report a problem we have not seen before.

If the customer refuses (which happens sometimes), there are 2 alternatives.

1) Create a test site (copy of the live site), you can remove any sensitive info from there, and provide them with access.

2) Use teamviewer to access the server through their computer.
