cannot select multiple categories when creating/editing a product

I'm having a big problem. I recently upgraded prestashop from 1.4.0 to

1.4.7.3 since then the drop down box when you either create or edit a product to select the products is not showing. I have 3 main categories and then a further 8 subcategories but it will only show the default category for where ever I originally selected the product placement and the home level. Nothing else will show.

 

I've attached a screenshot of my problem. This only happens in the back office - front office is ok and shows all the categories correctly.

 

Any help greatly appreciated as I've been looking for hours now on how to sort it and can't figure it out.

Got the same issue here. Looks like something must be buggered up. Thought perhaps a css issue, but changing user themes does not help either.

Anyone had any progress with this issue?? I manually ended up going into the database and adding my products to the second category, not sure this was the entirely correct way to get it to happen but I at least got my site into production.
