SQL statement to generate short description

Hi,

 

Could someone please tell me how I can automatically generate the short description using an SQL statement?

 

Each of my products has a long description and I would like the short description to be first 255 characters of the long description followed by five dots (....)

 

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I didn't try the entier code. I might be possible it doesn't work. So try it locally before to run it in production. I won't be responsible for any damage to your database and shop.

great instructions, but I would be interested in a different sql query,

do you think I could extract from DB several details like:

height, weight, depth, manufacturer and insert them into the short description?

 

please also point me to the files where the code should be inserted.
