Customer id instead of email address to register

I recently received a requirement from a client wherein they do not want to use email as the starting point for registration. They want to use employee id. This is an internal site for employees in the company selling their products at employee prices. Using the employee id, they can tie it in the back end to their payroll for deductions. much easier than using email address. Are they add ons that would do this? Any suggestions on how this can be achieved?

You could modify the code to just use an custromer ID, but automatically add to it @site-address.com (which will not be visible in the front end).

Although Ps uses that email to notify about orders, reset password etc... not sure it's wise not to use it.
