How to customize category menu

I have prestashop_1.4.7.0.

 

I have 4 different main category menus in the left column and I have 2 levels of subcategories.

 

I want all main category menus and all first level subcategory menus to be displayed without clicking. In other words, when opening home page, I want all main categories and 1st level subcateries to be listed and that means the main categories don't need to be clickable. 2nd level categories should be shown by clicking 1st level subcategories as they are now.

 

If you are not sure what I'm talking about, I found the same topic from the older version of prestashop here. But the following code didn't work for prestashop 1.4.7.
