tivicrdotcom
Ok so I started this subject here because I wasn't allowed to post it under News and Releases so here it goes. I spent the last 2 months intensively getting my current version 1.4.6.2 the way I wanted it not to mention learning a bunch of new stuff Now I logged in under my admin and noticed the heading: Download 1.4.7.0 final ! So here is my question to all prestashop experts: How smooth is the transaction going from 1.4.6.2 to 1.4.7.0? Last time even though I backed up everything prior to changing servers I lost a few hours of work with some missing images and custom modules so yeah, I don't want to upgrade to 1.4.7.0 final if it's gonna cost me time. Is it even worth it? I just logged in this morning to load a bunch of products and see that message and now I've lost at least 45 minutes doing research and writing this post instead of continue uploading products. How long can I stay on a version before it becomes obsolete? I need to focus on getting the site up and running instead of debating whether I should upgrade or not. So I'd appreciate any input on this subject, God bless all! Best Regards, AJ

tivicrdotcom
Yeah, thanks Jvr, I forgot to mention that too, I couldn't find neither info about it on the official prestashop website. Mike Kranzler
Hi everybody, You can find the changelog here. In the future though, just look for it when you click download: -Mike
Mark Hesketh
Hi guys, You can find out whats changed by viewing the changelog: http://www.prestashop.com/download/changelog_1.4.7.0.txt It comes down to a couple of new modules and the usual bug fixes/improvements to the software. Unless you've edited the core code an upgrade should be easy and cause no problems. Hopefully if you've made any custom changes you've used Prestashop's controller overrides etc. This means your changes won't be overwritten by future updates. Soon, Prestashop 1.5 will be coming along and that will be a much bigger change than this update, but I wouldn't worry about it, as I know clients who are still running Prestashop 1.2.5 and getting good success. To be safe, you should backup all your files/database beforehand, and try updating a copy of your store (maybe on your computer, rather than web hosting) and make sure nothing breaks. I'd be pretty confident you'll be okay though. Mark

tivicrdotcom
Hey Mark, thanks for your time, I wasn't aware of the Prestashop's controller overrides which it comes handy when upgrading. I guess I'll wait until 1.5 comes out and focus on making some money in the mean time. God bless all! Greetings from sunny Costa Rica AJ

Hey Mark is this still going to apply after 1.5 comes out? I just did two classes (not controllers) Product.php and Feature.php and I was just planning on going through the new classes and seeing if there were changes. I am back on 1.4.4.0 after a failed attempt at updating to the update 1.4.6.2... and about 3 hrs after pulling a 24hr run of backup/upgrade .. the new update came out. So will try again with the new update, but may just wait till 1.5 comes out cause I hear it has a new theme setup and some other stuff which I might as well wait for and dedicate my time to making sure I know about all of my changes and everything Just curious how much of the controllers and classes may change so I am aware of what to look for or not worry about.
Rhapsody
It is easy to look for changes between a new release and an older version using the open sourse tool called WinMerge It makes incorprating your mods very easy. You can open two directories and easily see where files are different, and once you open the files can easily see changes and copy the changes from one to the other as you wish. Kurmis
Hi all, Today i was upgrade my prestashop from 1.4.6.2 to 1.4.7.0. So, what I can say: upgrade is very easy and quickly. But after upgrade some modules dont work. These modules you need reinstal. The option Position dont work. You can not transplant a module. You are geting message: This module cannot be transplanted to this hook.

It looks to be a windows based program, while I do have and use windows it is only in VMware anymore. I use a Mac but I do find the program interesting or have for some time. when it comes down to it, to do what I need to do in a timely manner I may want to use it regardless of having to fire up vmware and etc. As for updating modules, I kind of want to take screenshots of the configurations of some of these modules, remove them then upgrade and then re-install... but will do some testing on a secondary site but will just wait till 1.5 now. tivicrdotcom
I agree, if your current version is doing the job leave it as it is and wait for 1.5 which will have major changes, and even then I'd wait a little until most bugs have been fixed. It will never 100% ready until after thousands of users from around the globe will try and use. Like Mark Hesketh mentioned above, there are a lot of people out there using 1.2.5 and getting good success. So is all about sticking to one version and perfecting it! Rhapsody
I've upgraded incrementally at every release. It helped me learn more as the releases were issued and I made mods. The most significant thing I learned was to use overrides rather than modify core code. This greatly simplified the update process. My update process now takes less than 30 minutes, including any mods needed to files. My theme is a modified basic Prestashop version 1.4 theme that is renamed so it is not overwitten using the automatic update. I added some custom fields in the ps_customer table to accomodate additional fields that are used for registration. These fields support membership information we formerly collected on paper forms are now in the customer registration fields in my modified theme. What I usually do is leave the custom theme and do an upgrade. At a later time I'll look at the changes in the normal Prestashop theme and make the same changes to my custom theme. This should help as new releases are issued. As a result - The modified files that I need to check and update if changes are made from the previous release include: BO Core Files - Must be checked for changes and updated as necessary AdminAddresses.php - Changed to display US States rather than Country, added validation for US Zip code in 2 formats NNNNN and NNNNN-NNNN AdminCustomers.php - adds the custom fields AdminOrders.php - modified so customer list displayed with 1st initial and last name, addded a display of custom field, deleted the "new" indicator Modules - Must be checked for changes and updated as necessary blockmyaccount.php (I've customized a login process & associated screen here) blocknewsletter.php (customized for email link unsubscribe) mailalert.php (gets rid of pink font that should never have been defined in a PHP file!) statsproduct.php (makes customer name display in addition to customer number, displays qty sold in summary table) Overrides - Classes - Don't need to do anything except test after upgrade. If broken, then check associated core file changes customer.php (adds the custom fields) PaymentModule.php (gets rid of pink font that should never have been defined in a PHP file!) PDF.php (adds a membership card that the customer can print with the invoice when membership is renewed online) Overrides - Controllers - Don't need to do anything except test after upgrade. If broken, then check associated core file changes AddressController.php - removed the "Force to all caps" address format for US Standard, added validation for US Zip code in 2 formats NNNNN and NNNNN-NNNN AuthController.php - removed the "Force to all caps" address format for US Standard Module Template Files - These are stored in the modules directory under my custom theme and have been tailored to provide the style and fields desired for display. Don't need to do anything except test after upgrade. If broken, then check associated file changes blockcategories blockcms blockmyaccount blockmyaccountfooter blockpermanentlinks cheque editorial I've played with the new Prestashop theme in 1.5 but will probably stay with the what is already setup with my custom theme based on the regular Prestashop format. Hopefully the update to version 1.5 should be as easy as it was for most every release.
tivicrdotcom
Great contribution Rhapsody! One of the many reasons I use prestashop for my business is because of its community. Always willing to share and contribute. What's your site? Best Regards, AJ
Rhapsody
Thanks - the site with the mods described above is here. I have another site that is pretty much the same, but without the addition of custom fields here and it supports three languages since it serves people who speak English, French & Sanish. Mike Kranzler
Hi Rhapsody, Thanks for this awesome rundown on your mods! If you wouldn't mind, I would love to pass this along to our team to see if there is a way to incorporate some of this information into a future upgrade guide. -Mike
Bradley Clampitt
Thanks for the useful information Rhapsody! I have been making lists in Evernote of changes I am making and code snippets of customized things to either do or that I have done. I am looking into integrating phpBB, FluxBB or some other BB along with my previous user registration I developed years ago so once I get a few things done on my task list that will be the next hurdle I plan to jump through. It didn't take me very long to edit my theme so all depending on how big of a change it is in 1.5 I may just keep mine as well, but I have some modifications I want to make to mine anyways so maybe I will just start over on a test site and then go live with the new update and new theme once I got it all configured the way I want Like tivicrdotcom said, I came here from elsewhere (PinnacleCart) because of the community and spending hours on end searching the forums for answers to my questions on pinnaclecart haha. After paying for PC and then support and getting nearly NO support on my questions I tackled them myself and then just decided to go elsewhere. I am not one bit upset of my change and while starting over is never fun it was a good learning process even if I don't like Smarty Templates and some of the other things that is the way it has been developed and I will learn with it to work with it
Rhapsody
Mike - Absolutely please pass the info on to the development team. If you want the mod files, let me know and I can forward them. Additionally I posted on the forge the following: PSCFI-2918 - Modify statsproducts.php to add display of customer name PSCFI-2853 Validating multiple postal / zip code formats for a single country PSCFI-3687 statsproduct.php displays wrong price for discounted products Bradley Clampitt - If you are able to integrate phpBB3 with Prestashop, that would be awesome. I just want to be able to share the login so if a user signs into one, they are automatically logged in the other.
Bradley Clampitt
That is my goal as well, in my previous versions of our website I had a forums that I created from scratch but it was way out of date being it was 2003 when I did it... and I feel that having a system that is more secure or from people who dedicate time to working on it would be more appropriate for a company's use. I am still trying to decide from phpBB or some of the others, I use to work with vBulletin and was helping on some old projects like vbPortal and etc. I kind of want a less frills version of a forums since I don't need all of the extra stuff that is offered other than just a basic forums considering the other development I am doing will incorporate it all together in the way I want. But regardless of what I decide, I will be more than happy to share what I have done with everyone here, because the information I use and find to help me get my task accomplished will most likely come from others helping those asking questions that are related to my task
